M4:D72 (D372) Goals explained (part 5)

November 1, 2008 By Michael Mahony, ISSA CPT Leave a Comment

What's on my mind today?

Happy Halloween to those who celebrate it.  Today I am going to outline another of my goals.

Get into the best shape of my life

This one seems like a rather broad goal, but it goes hand in hand with the previous goal of winning a competition in my age group.  When the 365 days has ended I will be at the lowest body fat % of my life and I will have ripped muscle all over my body.  I will have a six pack set of abs.  My strength will be at the highest level it has ever been at.  I will literally be in the best shape of my life.

In order to meet this goal I will need to be virtually perfect with my training and my nutrition.  I am expecting all my readers to keep holding me accountable.

Accountability is what got me this far and I plan to use it to get myself into the best shape of my life.

Find out what I'm doing to my body!

I will be honest that I was not that into my workout today.  Mentally I think I had checked out.  It has been a long week and I was very tired going into the gym.  However, I still managed to slaughter most of my lifts.  I also made a friend.

"You want just 1 plate on each side, right?"

As I walked up to do my leg press there was a man already on the machine.  He said he had one set of leg press left and asked if he could finish before I worked in.  I had no problem with this, especially when this was my first exercise of the day.  He did 270 lbs. (3 plates per side) and barely managed 8 repetitions.  This guy "looked" in pretty good shape.  As he got off the sled he looked at me and said "You want just 1 plate on each side, right?"  I smiled.

"No, I need to really load up the sled actually!" I replied.  He laughed and watched as I loaded 800 lbs. on the sled.

"How the hell are you going to lift that?" he asked.

"With intensity, man, with intensity!" I replied.

I got into the sled and did my repetitions.  When I finished he started to ask me a bunch of questions about my workout.  He asked how many more sets of leg press I had and when I informed him that I had none left he was shocked.  He couldn't understand how a 1 set for each exercise workout could possibly do anything for me.  We talked a bit and it turned out that he also does a full body workout, but does the standard high volume method.

Interestingly, Craig asked if he could join me in my workout, saying that he had just started his lifting routine for the day and was intrigued by my workout plan.  I took 15 minutes to explain to Craig how the H.I.T. workout functions.  I explained that he would need to use extreme intensity when doing his lifts.  I explained that he would need to take things to failure.

We worked out together.  He used far less weight than me on every single exercise despite being about 20 years younger than me and about 10 pounds heavier than me (muscular, not fat).  When the workout was over, Craig stated that he was amazed at how difficult it was.  He couldn't believe that he had only done one set per exercise and had still gotten a beating!

He watched me at the end of the workout do my deadlifts.  Once again I set up 300 lbs. on the bar and tore off 8 repetitions.  I explained to him that the amount you can lift depends alot upon the form you use in doing it.  After about 10 minutes I did another rep with the 300 lbs. just to show him what I meant.  I've learned that I get my best lifts when I get into position for the deadlift and then drop my butt down so that it is just about touching my calves.  I then drive my feet straight down into the ground and the bar comes up like it weighs nothing at all.

Craig is planning to meet up with me again on Tuesday to do another H.I.T. workout.  Maybe I have a partner now?  Time will tell.

M4:D71 (D371) Goals explained (part 4)

October 30, 2008 By Michael Mahony, ISSA CPT Leave a Comment

What's on my mind today?

Today I will continue discussing the details of my goals for the next 365 days.

Win a body building competition in my age division

For a long time I've wanted to be in a body building competition. However, I am not interested in competing, I want to win.  Thus, I am
training to win I am not training to compete.  Carlos DeJesus is assisting me with my training plan.  Currently I am bulking, so I am in a muscle growing stage.  I will eventually cut down fat later, but really I am surprised at how little fat I've gained during this phase.  My goal is to go to the competition in August 2009 and win my age division.  Yes, I will be #1 in my age division.  Once I win my age division I will set a new goal to win the entire competition.  I know, I know, I'm 43 years old and who am I to think I can win a competition, but I'm telling you it is going to happen.

That brings me to a point I'd like to make.

Never limit yourself!

We all have the tendency to defeat ourselves before we start.  That's just wrong.  You can't possibly know what will happen unless you try.  I always teach that when faced with a situation, trying things is the way to go.

M4:D70 (D370) Goals explained (part 3)

What's on my mind today?

Today I continue my discussion of my goals for the next 365 days.

Launch a new fitness website

Information overload–that's what I see with most of the people I talk to.  They have no clue what works and what doesn't. They are confused by the conflicting information they receive on the internet today.  I plan to present a simple plan for success that everyone can use.  I also plan to partner up with one of the biggest names in fitness to present this information to the public in a manner that will make it invaluable to everyone who uses the site.

This site will be completely separate from the companion site for my eBook.  This site will be an educational site.  Alot of what is contained in this site will also be in the physical book I plan to release.  My goal here is to help people understand the correct path to take on their road to physical fitness.

Today was a one hour steady state cardio session.  I rode the bike for the entire hour.  I managed to listen to 2 podcasts while riding.

M4:D69 (D369) Goals explained (part 2)

What's on my mind today?

Today I continue my discussion of my goals for the next 365 days.

Publish a paper book on fitness

I am planning to take everything I've learned in the past 365 days and compile a physical book on the topic of fitness and weight
training.  I will share all of the results I've gotten from various experiments.  I will share some unique ideas that I have come up with in my quest for a better, leaner body.  The techniques I will reveal in this book will help anyone gain the results they are looking for.  The idea will be simplicity in action.  No more information overload.  I will give you a clear and concise plan for getting the results you want.  The content will come from everything I have learned.  I will leave nothing out.  Every secret I know will be included.  It should be fun to write and even more fun to read.

Most likely I will sell the book from my Get Back to Lifting companion site.  Members will get a large discount on the book.  Non-members will pay full price.  I have not yet decided upon a price for this book.  Look for this to happen late in the year in 2009.

Today was another great workout.  I am totally in love with H.I.T.  I changed up my form on my Thigh Extensions and still managed to hit 210 lbs. and 12 repetitions.  I got aggressive and raised my standing calf raises to 800 lbs. and still managed to hit 14 repetitions.  I have to say that it was pretty ominous putting 800 lbs. on the sled and pushing it with just my calves.  I upped my squat to 235 lbs. and managed 8 repetitions.  I was a little disappointed in that effort, so off to the Quad Blaster to fix that issue!  I grabbed the 55 lbs. dumbbell and cranked out 15 repetitions.  My heart was pounding and my entire body was shaking.  Next I hit my pullovers.  I've been stressing with this exercise because it hurts my left tricep.  I focused on being perfect with the form.  Not only did the pain go away but I managed 4 more repetitions.  Isn't it interesting how when you do something correctly it just gets better?  The rest of the workout was just as good.  The highlight for me was my deadlifts.  I've been upping the weight in 5 and 10 lb. increments, but today I decided to go for 15 lbs.  I put 300 lbs. on the bar and managed to pull 7 repetitions.  It felt awesome lifting 300 lbs. off the ground.

M4:D68 (D368) Goals explained

October 27, 2008 By Michael Mahony, ISSA CPT Leave a Comment

What's on my mind today?

Yesterday I commented on my goals for the coming 365 days and today I'd like to go into more detail about those goals.  I will choose one goal each day and explain what I have in mind for that goal.

Finally publish my eBook

Unfortunately, I've "finished" this eBook several times, but each time I go through and edit I find more and more information I want included in the text.  My plan will be to publish Get Back to Lifting and the companion web site around the beginning of 2009.  I am extremely excited because this eBook will help all those who have had back surgeries or other back injuries get back to lifting.  I explain in great detail how to go about a lifting program after a back injury.  The information I provide comes directly from the plan I followed after my back surgery.  As my workouts show, my back is not a limiting factor in my workouts at all any more.

The companion website will likely have a membership area which will require a monthly fee and a free area as well.  The free area will have abridged articles and less information than the membership area.  The membership area will have full articles and tons of great information, including a discussion board.  I'm very excited about launching this eBook and the companion website.

Find out what I'm doing to my body!

Today was an interval cardio day for me.  I did my usual intervals but on the elipptical instead of the treadmill.  I got my heart rate up to 145 BPM then kept it there for 2 minutes and allowed my heart rate to recover to 105 BPM and repeated the process for 30 minutes.
