M6:D78 (D556) Dougal McDonald

What's on my mind today?

If you’ve been around the Shreddersphere very long you know Dougal McDonald.  Dougal’s story is amazing and you must read it yourself to get the full picture.  Head on over to Mind Body Superfit Blog and read about Dougal’s surfing injury and the several surgeries he has experienced as a result.

Dougal is competing in Adam Waters’ RTP Transformation Contest and I believe he has an excellent chance to win.  In the past, Dougal won the Body for Life challenge, so he is a formidable opponent in this contest.   Due to circumstances beyond my control (ie. Adam Waters refusing to allow me back into the Shreddersphere out of his own stubbornness, and for no other good reason) I am unable to cheer these guys on, but I am watching the external blogs and cheering for the contestants in that manner.

Head on over to Dougal’s blog and leave a comment.  Let him know that you are supportive of his efforts as he attempts to win the RTP Transformation Contest.

M6:D77 (D555) Macronutrients: Do They Matter?

May 3, 2009 By Michael Mahony, ISSA CPT Leave a Comment

The Muscle Building Fat Burning Video Blog #36

What's on my mind today?

Macronutrients—carbohydrates, fats, protein—get alot of attention in most nutrition plans, but should they?  Is it important to count macronutrient ratios or is it more important to count calories?  Does it make a difference either way?  Here are my reasons why it isn’t important at all:

  • Low carb or higher carb–for most people it doesn't matter. Losing fat is about burning more calories than you eat.
  • Low fat or high fat–as long as it is essential fatty acids and good fat it really doesn't matter. Good fat in the form of essential fatty acids actually helps with fat loss. Again, it is more about calories than anything else.
  • Calories are the reason you gain or lose fat, so it is much more important to count calories.
  • Experimenting with macronutrients is a good way to find what works for you, but it still comes back to calories in versus calories out.
  • I've personally tried many different macronutrient ratios. All of them worked as long as I paid attention to total calories.

The bottom line is that calories are king in this discussion.  If you eat 4,000 calories and keep a perfect 40/40/20 carb/protein/fat ratio you are still going to gain fat.  There is no doubt in my mind.  The simple formula is still true—you lose fat when the number of calories you consume is less than what you expend on a daily basis.

Have you ever felt like your heart was going to just burst out of your chest? Have you ever felt like you were going to pass out at the end of every set?  Have you ever felt like you needed to crawl to the next station?  Have you ever felt nauseous the entire workout?  Unless you answered yes to each of those questions, you have no idea how the workout today made me feel.  I can actually feel the muscles growing and the fat melting as I do these workouts.  There is a definite metabolic change taking place in my body.  It sounds sick, but I love the feeling I get.

Macronutrients are just the building blocks of your nutrition, while calories are the end point.

Check Their Credentials

May 2, 2009 By Michael Mahony, ISSA CPT 1 Comment

As a way of helping you help yourself, I will be running a series about identifying who might be worth paying attention to and who to run from when looking into fitness programs.  As with everything else presented on Fitness Exposé, I will present you with some principles and then you can use those principles to guide you in your endeavors.

Why is it important?

I get asked this question alot.  Why is it important to check out the people you are getting training information from?  The internet is an awesome place and is loaded with information, but that’s exactly the problem.  It is altogether too easy to publish anything you want on the internet and then establish yourself as an “expert”.  As the consumer, it is up to you to check things out, even the information provided on this site.

I am a Christian, so I believe in what the Bible has to say on these issues and it is very clear.

“Now these were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so.” Acts 17:11

The idea here is simple and one that cannot be easily denied.  Those who check things out for themselves are at an advantage over those who do not.  It is difficult to be duped if you spend just a little time doing research before making a decision on what to do.

Sales pages on the internet are called “squeeze pages” for a reason—they want to squeeze your money out of you before you have a chance to change your mind.  Don’t fall prey to that mentality.  Stop and think before you make a purchase.  The next article in this series will discuss the technique that I use for avoiding being squeezed by the “squeeze pages” that exist on the internet.

The Guarantee

Most of the marketers on the internet utilize Clickbank to sell their products because it is easy.  At the same time, they also utilize the money back guarantee concept as well.

guarantee

So if it is guaranteed, why do so few people take advantage of the guarantee?  The next article in this series will discuss why it is important to hold these guys to their word.  You won’t want to miss the information that is presented in that article as it will change your risk factor on this issue forever.

Their Credentials

The word credentials is closely related to the word credibility.  You need to check the credentials of the person offering you the information.  Why should you be listening to the advice they have?  What makes them an “expert” on the topic at hand?

At Fitness Exposé we are qualified to speak on this topic because we’ve been burned by these so-called fitness experts several times.  We have developed a method for stopping this from happening and that’s why this website exists in the first place.  The final article in the series will examine a method for checking the credentials of your “expert” so that you can make an informed decision about the information they are trying to sell you.

Be Part of the Solution

If you aren’t part of the solution you are part of the problem.  You will learn that you have the power to change things if you just respond in a consistent manner.  If you aren’t sure how to be part of the solution, this site is just what the doctor ordered.  With my panel of experts, I will give you the information you need to be part of the solution.  Remember, we are here to help you help yourself.

M6:D76 (D554) Train Your Brain!

May 2, 2009 By Michael Mahony, ISSA CPT Leave a Comment

The Muscle Building Fat Burning Video Blog #35

What's on my mind today?

Your brain is a very important aspect of your physique transformation.  Next week I will be discussing my goal setting process and you will see why the brain is extremely important in that.  For now, let’s discuss the way your brain is important to your fitness program and then we will talk about how to train your brain.

Why Your Brain is Important

  • Motivation. Your brain is where you execute upon all motivating factors.
  • Willpower. Your brain is the source of your willpower.
  • Decision-making. Your brain is where the decisions are made
  • Intensity. Your brain determines how much intensity you can and will use during a workout.

How to Train Your Brain

  • Puzzles. Jigsaw puzzles are a great way to train your brain. You learn to recognize patterns and put them together correctly.
  • Reading. Reading takes your imagination and pushes it to new levels. You are forced to see the scenes in your mind. You expand your knowledge and your vocabulary.
  • Chess. Playing chess forces you to think. Thinking expands your brain capacity.
  • Food. Choosing the right food will also help train your brain. Fish oil and Omega-3, 6 and 9 oils are brain food. Use them daily.

Take these thoughts and apply them and you will begin to see changes that you are looking for.
