M6:D26 (D504) Beating stress

March 13, 2009 By Michael Mahony, ISSA CPT Leave a Comment

What's on my mind today?

It is obvious, but at times we forget—working out is a great way to relieve your stress.  With my work schedule the way it has been, this has made my workouts even more important these days.

I have felt so much more relaxed because I’ve upped my cardio to, at times, twice a day.  The extra cardio is relieving my stress in a big way.  This is important because when my stress is down my concentration is up.

I am 25% of the way through this mission and pushing hard.  I plan to make some major gains in both muscle gain and fat loss.  It is an exciting time.

M6:D25 (D503) Keys to Growth: Eat

March 11, 2009 By Michael Mahony, ISSA CPT Leave a Comment

What's on my mind today?

It may seem obvious, but most people miss it.  If you want to grow you have to eat and eat alot.  That’s a key to growth for sure.

Most people start out by cutting calories down so severely that they can’t possibly gain muscle.  Eating should be clean, but you have to keep your calories up if you expect to grow.  Some people are able to see growth right at their maintenance level.  Others, like me, need a slight increase in calories to grow.

I will let you in on a secret.  When you see those people who have done tremendous physique transformations and they look like they’ve gained so much muscle, the real truth is that they’ve cut out their body fat so much that the muscle underneath shows better.  They have not gained muscle, they have created an illusion by removing fat.

If you increase muscle your body becomes a natural fat burning machine.  So, if you want to grow, eat more!

I did my cardio as steady state on the treadmill.  I lasted 60 minutes today.

M6:D24 (D502) Keys to Growth: Consistency

March 10, 2009 By Michael Mahony, ISSA CPT Leave a Comment

What's on my mind today?

Growth is done via a building block approach and that is why consistency is so important.  You have to get into the gym and do the work on a regular basis or you will not see growth.  Once I learned this I started to see major gains in my physique.

Consistency is one of the things that is hard to develop and even harder to hang on to.  You have to do things to keep yourself consistent.  I have personally discovered that I need to workout early in the morning.  If I don’t, life gets in the way and it doesn’t happen.  My way of keeping myself consistent in the morning is to set two alarm clocks, one that I have to get up and turn off.  Once I am up I am ready to hit the gym.

If you are not experiencing gains, take a look at your consistency.  How are you doing?  Are you hitting the gym on a regular basis or is it more of a hit and miss basis?  That could be the answer to why you are not seeing gains.

M6:D23 (D501) Keys to Growth: Rest

March 9, 2009 By Michael Mahony, ISSA CPT Leave a Comment

What's on my mind today?

One of the most often overlooked keys to growth is rest.  The fact is that you do not grow in the gym, you grow while you rest.

Most people do not get enough rest.  They compromise their ability to grow by not getting enough sleep.  I have found that taking naps is essential.  My body just makes me do it.  The harder I work in the gym the more my body demands rest.  I listen and give it what it needs.

Your muscles rebuild while you rest.  In addition, your body releases human growth hormone in the early stages of your sleep.  The two combined do wonders for keeping your body growing.

If you are trying to decide why you are not growing and you’ve examined every other area and found them to be in line, rest is probably your issue.  Give yourself more time to rest and you will see things turn around.

Today I did cardio on the bike. Intervals were hit hard and they were fun!

M6:D22 (D500) Keys to Growth: Progression

March 8, 2009 By Michael Mahony, ISSA CPT Leave a Comment

What's on my mind today?

Yesterday I discussed intensity as a key to growth.  Today we will discuss progression and its importance as a key to growth.

As you workout you will find the need to use progression in your program.  Progression comes in the form of either increased repetitions or increased weight being moved.  The fact is that your muscles get used to the amount of volume you subject them to.  Progression is a way to insure that you continue to challenge your muscles.

Another form of progressions is time under tension for the muscle.  This is one of the key concepts of the slow repetition.  You increase the time under tension to push your muscles harder.  This, in turn, causes growth to happen.

Progression is a very important principle and must not be forgotten.  Properly used, progression will cause growth.  You will see it sooner than later.
