The past few days have seen a discussion of the Anabolic Mindset. As I reviewed my time machine article from yesterday about total immersion as a means of focus, I realized that the Total Immersion Mindset is something I should probably revisit as it is a subset of the Anabolic Mindset. Think of the Anabolic Mindset as being the main container. With that in mind, the Total Immersion Mindset is inside that main container assisting with getting you to the Anabolic Mindset state. But what is the Total Immersion Mindset anyway? When I do something I get really into it. The more committed to something I am the better I do with it. I read everything on the subject. I learn as much as I possibly can about the subject. I see the subject as living and breathing, a live creature so it seems. Fitness is something that I am totally immersed in. To me it is not about simply working out or eating a certain way, it is about immersing myself in a lifestyle that will make those things a reality. I have come to the point where, using the Total Immersion Mindset, I know exactly how hard I can push my body. I understand my limits and I use them to my benefit. Unlike some, I do not use my limits to stop myself, I use them to push myself even further. The Total Immersion Mindset will also sharpen your thinking. You will see things more clearly because you are immersed in the details. Your endurance will increase because the Total Immersion Mindset motivates you to achieve more. You then use the Total Immersion Mindset to get you to the Anabolic Mindset. You use the tools the Total Immersion Mindset gives you to achieve the Anabolic Mindset state. Once there you cannot turn back. The Total Immersion Mindset will keep you there, pushing you further and further until you achieve the goals you set via the Anabolic Mindset. |

Today was an interval cardio session. I did my 30 minutes on the treadmill doing a series of intervals where my heart rate was raised to 145 BPM for 2 minutes and then allowed to recover to 105 BPM. |

M4:D90 (D390) Fat loss and muscle gain…are they the same thing?
Yesterday I talked about the Anabolic Mindset. Hopefully I've gotten you thinking about what the best way is to lose fat. Many of you really love the Metabolic Surge program and for good reason–it works. However, if you were to increase your calories and follow that same program, I bet you'd put on muscle at first and later you'd burn fat. That's how it works. You have to rev up the engine and then, after you've built up and stoked the fires, your body begins to peel off fat like mad. You need to change the way you think. That's why I call it the Anabolic Mindset. Fat loss and muscle gain do not have to happen seperately. I know I once believed that the two were seperate actions, but I've since determined that the best approach to fat loss is muscle gain. That's right, get yourself into the Anabolic Mindset and put on muscle and you will shed fat as well. It is scary at first, but trust me on this. You should eat at least at maintenance level of calories (preferably a little higher) and work out with extreme intensity. By doing these things you will gain muscle. Muscle, as we all know, burns fat. This is where the Anabolic Mindset comes in. Focus your efforts on maximum muscle gain and you will eventually see maximum fat loss. It is just a fact. |

The progression continues. I admit that I am surprised that as I close in on 12 straight weeks of H.I.T. I am still progressing in all lifts. When my next round of lifting begins I will be posting my workout log and my son's workout log as well. I want everyone to see that H.I.T. works for people of all ages and ability levels. Example: Prior to starting H.I.T. my son was stuck at the empty 45 lb. bar for his bench press. In his last workout he hit 70 lbs. x 8 repetitions. He's been doing H.I.T. for about 4 weeks. Yes, he went up 25 lbs. on his bench in 4 weeks. Better yet, that is an increase of 56%. How many of you would like to see a 50% increase in your strength in just 4 weeks? I hear some of you out there right now thinking "That's not possible for me" yet you will plunk down $50 for the latest "guru's" workout eBook that makes the same promises and yet has never been proven on anyone, including the "guru." |

We tend not to believe in ourselves and that is a major limiting factor in everything we do. |

M4:D89 (D389) The Anabolic Mindset
Last week saw me revisit the Anabolic Diet with some minor modifications. The week was a complete and total success on the nutrition front. My energy was way up and that means eventually my lifts will go way up as well. I am really happy to be in this mindset. I call it the Anabolic Mindset. Let me explain. Everything I do these days for my body is aimed at building mass. I have been working on my abdominal program, tweaking it and perfecting it. I have been changing up my eating to maximize muscle growth, taking in alot of calories every single day. I have been doing High Intensity Training to push the envelope. I want to achieve my maximum genetic potential. However, that's not enough. I want to push past that through modifications that can happen when you train extremely hard. My entire mindset has changed towards muscle building and not so much towards fat burning. To me, the Anabolic Mindset is akin to the Larger Engine Theory. By getting yourself into the Anabolic Mindset you will burn fat from the increased muscle on your body. However, you must be in the Anabolic Mindset to most effectively gain mass. I will probably change the name of my blog for the next mission to be The Muscle Building Fat Burning Machine. This will not change the URL of the blog, but it will change in my header graphic and every other place on my blog. It represents my new mindset. What are you doing to get yourself into an Anabolic Mindset? Are you pushing yourself as hard as you possibly can in your workouts? Are you using any of the many forms of High Intensity Training? Are you eating with muscle building in mind? If you are not doing these things, I strongly suggest reevaluating your mindset today. |

M4:D88 (D388) Wonderful
Today was a wonderful day. I like rest days because I know that I am growing while resting. I spent some time with my youngest daughter, Alyssa, working on her chess studies. She really loves the game and pesters me for lessons on a daily basis. I think that daily lessons are far too much, so I just try to control her expectations. She is very excited that she is now learning strategy. It is wonderful to see her eyes light up as I explain things to her. She enjoys the game and she enjoys her time with daddy. Of course, it is a wonderful time for me because I get to spend it one on one with one of my beautiful children. Today I realized just how thankful I am for my family. I love them all very much. This coming year my wife and I will be married for 20 years. I've made alot of mistakes during that time and I'm amazed that she is still around. I have learned from my mistakes and she and I are doing better than ever. I am really looking forward to our 20th Anniversary in June 2009. |

M4:D87 (D387) I was just thinking
I had of time to think today and it gave me a few new ideas that I am not ready to share with you yet. At the same time, it also brought up some old topics for me that I still feel very strong about. Over the past year I've learned alot of things about how to get results from training. Much of what I learned is not earth shattering, but it isn't known by the majority of people attempting the things I've been attempting. Before meeting Carlos DeJesus I was already convinced of this thing called The Experiment of One. Speaking with Carlos merely confirmed the power of the Experiment of One for me. During the course of the past year I've experimented with my nutrition to find what works for my body. I read alot of information about what is supposed to work, but my intellect never let me believe that these things would just work for everyone. It just made no sense to me. How could everyone who weighs 220 lbs. need 3300 calories? What about the guy who is 220 lbs. and 30% body fat? He is going to need less calories than the guy who is 220 lbs. and 10% body fat because he doesn't have the muscle to increase his resting metabolic rate. This lead me to experiment with various forms of carb cycling. I found that I could take the things I'd read and modify them by combining ideas and I would get dramatically different results. At one point I did 3 straight weeks where I existed mostly on protein shakes with some small amounts of carbs here and there. I had fantastic results and have even maintained those results since that point in time. When I started to plan my bulking phase, everything I read said you couldn't lose fat and gain muscle at the same time. My own experiments have proven this to be false. I managed to do both–gain muscle and lose fat. It was just a matter of eating the right things in a large enough quantity that I would gain muscle, but working hard enough that my body used fat for fuel. I will not sit here and tell you that you can do everything I did and get the same results. However, I will tell you that you should experiment. Don't be afraid to mix and match ideas. Any course of action you take can be modified at any time, so why be afraid? Pay careful attention to the results you get from the various things you try. Use those results and measurements to come up with your next experiment. When you find something that hits the sweet spot, work it for as long as you can. When the results slow down or stop completely, change things up. Take things to the next level. Don't be complacent. Work on your exercise plan the same way you work on your nutrition plan. Try things. See what works for you. When you find a good method, stick with it. For me this has been High Intensity Training. My body likes the recovery time and I personally enjoy the excitement of the workouts. Again, I would never say that what is right for me must be right for you. However, when it comes to High Intensity Training, there are so many ways to accomplish it that I strongly believe a variant of it will work for each and every person. H.I.T. is just a method that takes your body to the limits and then forces it to grow and change. |

Eating was incredibly easy this week. I kept the carbs very low for the weekdays of Monday through Thursday and upped them on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I've had great energy all week. I've used nuts and seeds to up the fat in my diet (and peanut butter as well). That has resulted in extra energy without blowing the calories out of the water. It is a great strategy to use for anyone trying to keep their calories to a set number, but their carbs to a low number. |

Today was a 1 hour steady state cardio session on the treadmill. |
