M3:D98 Starting Right

What's on my mind today?

It is a new week and it reminds me of the importance of starting strong, starting right.  The first workout of the week sets the tone for all other workouts during the week.  Start off weak and you will have a bad week.  Start off strong and the sky's the limit.

I took this to heart today and had an awesome lifting session.  I simply love how pumped I get from a great workout like today's workout.

At the same time, it is important to start your week right in other ways as well.  I strongly believe that Monday just plain sets the tone for the coming week.  You can run into problems, but the way you handle them will determine how well your week goes.  Get stressed by every little thing and you are sure to have a very stressful week.  Take things in stride and nothing can upset your week.

Please remember this important principle as you progress through each new week.  You are sure to make better progress when you have the right attitude at the start of the week.  Remember, you have to continually be thinking about how you are going to avoid undoing all the good you've already done.  You have to be focused on the progress you have been making and on keeping that success moving ahead.  Nothing should stand in your way.  You will fight like a champion and win most of the battles, but certainly winning the war.  It is a foregone conclusion when you have the right attitude.

Today was shoulder day.  I am now working on pre-exhaustion prior to the compound exercises.  I throw in an isolation exercise and superset it with a compound exercise.  The isolation exercise works your muscles just enough to make the compound exercise that much harder.  The rest time is kept low.  The sets are kept at 4 per exercise.  I worked my butt off today.  My shoulders are now completely and totally fried yet again and they just fully recovered from last week's torturous workout on Saturday.  They are now screaming at me yet again.

What's on my mind today?

Sorry, not alot to say today.  I spent the day at the Vans Warped Tour concert.  I had a great time.  I packed my own food so that worked out well.  I wasn't able to eat a ton of whole food, but I packed several shakes and some seeds and nuts.  It was a good overall day.

More Fat Burning Philosophy tomorrow.

M3:D96 Intense unadulterated feelings

What's on my mind today?

I've been watching the Olympics on and off the past week.  It got me thinking about alot of things related to life. 

Here are these young people who have dedicated their entire lives to the pursuit of a dream.  They put everything else on hold in their life to reach the goal they have.  Even those who have spouses/girlfriends/boyfriends tend to be with other Olympic-type athletes.  I believe the reason for that is obvious.  Who else would be able to put up with the extreme amount of time and dedication that is required to reach the level they are all at?  They say that is why alot of Hollywood actors and actresses end up together–they understand “the lifestyle” better than anyone else.

This got me to thinking about the passionate pursuit of anything in life.  It reminds me of when you see something that you want and you just get these intense unadulterated feelings about going for it.  You are willing to climb over the highest walls to get to where you want to go because you have intense unadulterated feelings about your destination. 

I was watching an episode of Monk yesterday that represents just this very thing.  Monk is a detective from San Francisco who lost his wife to a murder.  He was so deeply in love with his wife that he just can't move on so he keeps her stuff intact.  He also has an issue with germs.  He cannot touch anything unless it is wiped off or he uses tissue to touch it.  In this particular episode, Monk is friends with a heavyweight boxer.  The boxer is in trouble and being threatened because 5 years earlier, at a time when he was at the top of his game, he threw a title fight so that his manager's child could get a life saving operation.  They bet against him and he threw the fight.  Now someone wants him dead as a result.  Monk and the boxer have a tight relationship.  Monk has to pass a physical fitness test (something that is impossible for him) and so the boxer trains him.  You see Monk trying to do pull ups.  You see him running stairs.  You see him jumping over the lower pillars of the bleachers.

As the show continues, a rematch is happening from the fight 5 years previous.  A sniper is in the building to take out Monk's friend.  Monk notices the sniper from a distance and all the training the boxer gave him kicks in.  He is able to do feats of strength never before imaginable.  He does it because of his purely intense unadulterated feelings towards his friend.  In the end he manages to save his friend from the boxer.  It is an amazing story when you actually see the whole thing.

Now I ask you to find out if that's how you feel about your fitness program.  Are your feelings about it purely intense and unadulterated?  If not, you are missing the boat.  Feelings like that will carry you anywhere.  Always remember that it isn't about how fast you complete the journey, it is about completing the journey at all.  You give yourself a 100% chance at success if you have feelings that are intense and unadulterated.  Just go for it.  Don't hold yourself back.  Life is about taking risks so what are you waiting for?

Today was a slow and steady cardio session in my target heart rate range of 100 to 115 bpm.  I walked on the treadmill at a pretty good incline for 60 minutes.  I actually am back to enjoying the long cardio sessions again.

Life is about risks so why do so few people actually allow themselves to take risks?  Are they really living life to the fullest if they don't take risks?

M3:D95 Happiness

What's on my mind today?

Today's post has less to do with fitness and more to do with life in general.  Happiness can be an elusive thing.  Many people spend their lives chasing after happiness.  It comes in so many different forms.  People tend to think that everything in their life must be happy in order for them to consider their life happy.  I wonder about that decision.

Happiness can involve finding that right person to have as part of your life.  The person you want to share everything with.  She's that person who you can talk with until the wee hours of the morning even when you have to get up for work in the morning.  She's the person you can share all your secrets with.  She's your partner for life.  Having this person in your life is happiness.

Happiness can involve children.  Children tend to bring joy to everyone in a family.  Children are something to be cherished and protected.  Having children in your life is happiness.

Happiness can involve choosing the right career path for yourself.  A career can be very rewarding.  The daily challenge of one's career and the personal growth one obtains from the career are forms of happiness in themselves. 

Happiness can involve friends.  Having a friend that you can talk to about anything is amazing.  Having that friend who never judges you, but will set you straight is invaluable.    Having a good friend in your life is happiness.

I could go on and on about what happiness can be, but the point is really not that hard to grasp.  You can have a happy life without everything being perfect.  If you focus on those things that make you happy and attempt to improve those things that don't, you will soon realize just how much happiness you have in your life.  We all tend to dwell too much on the negative aspects of our life and not enough on the smaller pieces of happiness we have.

I personally feel that it is so easy to be negative.  It really doesn't take that much effort.  If I want to pick something apart, I can do it instantly.  Now turn that around and find several good things about a topic and suddenly you have a job on your hand.  I believe that this is because we spend too much time on the negative.  We are far too comfortable there.  Today I am suggesting that we change that.  Start complimenting people more.  Start complimenting yourself more.  Begin to look for the good in every situation.  As you practice this type of behavior you will soon see a paradigm shift towards being more happy.  Trust me here, it works.

Today I continued through my tour of body parts, landing on the chest.  More of the same as the rest of the week with a weight that I can do 50 reps with.  I hit 2 exercises back to back, no rest between exercises and no rest between sets.  I completed 12 sets of each exercise for a total of 24 sets.  My chest feels slightly sore, but it isn't reacting the same as the rest of my body and that has me thinking about the right way to approach chest training.

M3:D94 Determination

What's on my mind today?

My friend and I were again discussing his workout routine.  He was telling me how hard it is to lift regularly. I let him talk.  He expressed that he was having a hard time increasing weights, etc.  He has only been lifting a very short time, so this shouldn't be a problem.

I realized as I was listening that he lacked the determination to get the job done.  Things are not easy, but you tell yourself you can get the job done and you will. That's what determination is all about.  You refusing to give up.  Taking on the challenge that is presented to you each time you enter the gym.  Being consistent with your planned workouts. 

Adding weight is never something easy, but when done correctly it stretches you.  You move to a different level each time you add weight.  If you have determination you will tell yourself that you are going to get the weight up and get the set done.  If you lack that determination you might not even try to add weight in the first place.  This will lead to stagnation as you make no progress in your lifting program.

Determination is a decision we make.  We decide that we are going to do these things.  We also decide that we are not going to do these things.  The decision you make determines which path you wind up on–success or failure.  Nobody wants to fail, so why do so many people freely choose lack of determination?

Today was more lactic acid training.  My back was the focus today.  Yet another huge burn by the end of the workout.  My back has been sore all day long.  My shoulders still hurt from Monday!  This plan really hits the body hard!
