M4:D10 (D310) Walking along

August 31, 2008 By Michael Mahony, ISSA CPT Leave a Comment

What's on my mind today?

Ever since I had my metabolic testing done and found out that my body is not that efficient at burning fat, I've been walking for
cardio.  I do 4 sessions a week (per the metabolic expert) broken into 2 30 minute "interval" sessions and 2 60 minute "steady state" sessions.  On the one hand, it doesn't feel right, but on the other hand, I've learned that sometimes things are not what they seem.  I've opted to listen to the metabolic specialist and so far it seems to be working.  I lose fat each week and gain muscle.  It seems to be an effective plan so, as I've preached here before, I stick it out regardless of whether it makes sense or not.

Walking seems to be a very effective form of cardio, especially when you do it on a treadmill.  I am able to adjust various variables like speed and incline.  I use a heart rate monitor and keep my heart rate in the range I've been assigned.  While I originally scoffed at the effectiveness of walking, I find that by doing this as prescribed, I am very sweaty within 5 minutes of starting and I generally have to go for 60 minutes.  It is a good workout for sure.  When I do my intervals I do it the way the metabolic specialist recommends.  I get my heart rate up to 145 BPM and then keep it there for 2 minutes.  I then let my body recover to 105 BPM (however long that takes) before getting the heart rate back up to 145 BPM for another interval of 2 minutes.  I've found over the past few weeks that I take less and less time to recover back to 105 BPM.  That sounds like I am making progress for once in my life with cardio.

Thus, I find myself walking along in this journey these days.  There is no hurry.  I want results and results I shall get.  At this point in my journey I know it is about taking my time and achieving my goals.  It isn't about being in a hurry.  You don't have to be in a hurry either.  Take your time and achieve your goals.  You will be happier as a result.  You won't be stressing about how long it is taking you.  Believe me, this is the way to go.

Today was a 60 minute steady state cardio session.  As stated above, I was unsure about these sessions at first, but they seem to be working and so I will be sticking with them.

M4:D9 (D309) Friends

What's on my mind today?

Today my good friend, Mike:  Aussie Body Builder, had a milestone.  He reached 300 consecutive days of blogging.  This is an awesome achievement and my congratulations go out to him!

Friends like Mike are rare.  While I've never met Mike in person, only knowing him through his blog comments, blog posts and emails that we exchange with each other, Mike has been a tremendous source of support for me throughout my journey.  His unfailing support has given me alot of motivation.  There are honestly times when I'm at the gym and I think about Mike's workouts and I push myself even harder.  He and I have shared personal issues via email and we try to support each other in every way.  It is a great feeling to have a friend like Mike.

Life is a seriously difficult place without friends.  I have only a handful of good friends whom I can confide in.  One of those good friends reads this blog.  He found it through my Facebook profile.  I do not advertise to people that I do this blog.  I'm not really sure why.  This friend of mine has been giving me some very positive comments and has told me this blog is motivational.  It helps me to push harder each and every day.

M4:D8 (D308) Perseverance

August 29, 2008 By Michael Mahony, ISSA CPT Leave a Comment

What's on my mind today?

Yesterday I spoke about the need for strength during a transformation and today I am going to tell you about perseverance.  You can't make it through a transformation without perseverance.  You have to stick to it in order to succeed.  This is where other blogs come in handy.

When you feel like giving up, take a trip around to the other blogs.  Read about what everyone else has gone through and how they've overcome those issues.  Learn from their mistakes and successes.  You can do it if they can do it.  It just requires perseverance on your part.

There have been times during my journey that I have felt like giving up.  It gets to be too much.  I feel like I can't keep it going.  At those times the other blogs help me tremendously.  Those are also the times that the blog comments I receive change my attitude.  I realize that it isn't too much and that I can keep it going.  I then put one foot in front of the other and continue the journey.  Yes, it is never easy to make the right choices, but the right choices are what got me here and so I must persevere.

This is a journey and with any journey you have to keep your eye on the prize.

"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us."  (Hebrews 12:1)

M4:D7 (D307) Strength

August 28, 2008 By Michael Mahony, ISSA CPT Leave a Comment

What's on my mind today?

This transformation game requires strength.  It isn't enough to set up a plan and begin to work it, you must have the strength to get through it to the end.  This strength comes from within yourself.  It isn't something someone else can give you.  We can encourage you, support you, cheer you on, but we can't give you the strength you need to succeed.

I have found over the past year that strength can come and go.  It is what you do with yourself during times of weakness that really matters.  You have to avoid behaviors that will undo what you have already done.  Frankly, I believe we all go through periods where our behaviors don't propel us forward, but that is not as disasterous  as behavior that sets us back.  A holding pattern is never desireable, but it is ok as long as we don't fall backwards.

Dig deep and you will find your strength.  It is there.  If it wasn't, you wouldn't be here reading these words.  You would be off eating the wrong things and not exercising.  You would not be the slightest bit interested in reading what I have to say because what I have to say only effects one person–me.  This blog is all about me and what I am doing.  If it helps you, that's an awesome thing.  I honestly hope and pray that it helps millions of people.

Great workout!  I had never done dumbbell deadlifts before.  It is different because you have to support the weight in each hand.  Grip really becomes a huge issue.  This was a great leg workout.  I really felt the burn.  It is interesting doing body part splits because as each day goes by a new body part is experiencing DOMs.  What a trip that is.

Strength from within is a powerful driving force during a transformation.
