My friend and I were again discussing his workout routine. He was telling me how hard it is to lift regularly. I let him talk. He expressed that he was having a hard time increasing weights, etc. He has only been lifting a very short time, so this shouldn't be a problem. I realized as I was listening that he lacked the determination to get the job done. Things are not easy, but you tell yourself you can get the job done and you will. That's what determination is all about. You refusing to give up. Taking on the challenge that is presented to you each time you enter the gym. Being consistent with your planned workouts. Adding weight is never something easy, but when done correctly it stretches you. You move to a different level each time you add weight. If you have determination you will tell yourself that you are going to get the weight up and get the set done. If you lack that determination you might not even try to add weight in the first place. This will lead to stagnation as you make no progress in your lifting program. Determination is a decision we make. We decide that we are going to do these things. We also decide that we are not going to do these things. The decision you make determines which path you wind up on–success or failure. Nobody wants to fail, so why do so many people freely choose lack of determination? |

Today was more lactic acid training. My back was the focus today. Yet another huge burn by the end of the workout. My back has been sore all day long. My shoulders still hurt from Monday! This plan really hits the body hard! |

M3:D93 Body parts

It has been a long time since I've done a body part split, but I'm truly enjoying the freedom to work one body part each day. I don't know if I am necessarily able to work harder, but at least I am extremely focused. When the DOMs sets in I can tell specifically if I had correct form based on where the soreness hits me. I used to exclusively do body part splits when I started working out. I gradually shifted over the The New Rules of Lifting methodology of nothing but compound lifts. I really enjoyed that methodology alot. I found the workouts to be difficult. I was able to put out some extreme intensity with those workouts. Now I am back to the body part split. It is too soon to say whether I like it or not, but at least, as I say, I am enjoying the focus. When I first read that during week 1 I'd only be doing 2 exercises per session I thought it was a joke. Now I get why. The intensity is high and the volume is just right. Any extra exercises would be a complete and total waste because by the time you get to the 12th set you can only crank out between 3 and 6 reps. |

Today was a continuation of the week's lactic acid training but this time with legs. Again, 2 exercises, supersetted, no rest between exercises or sets and aim for 50 reps on the first set and positive failure on each set thereafter. It was incredible. What a pump. |

When someone challenges you, look them in the eye and dare them to do what you just did. |

M3:D92 Great Feeling

Today was a busy work day for me. I had alot of fires to extinguish and spent most of the day doing that. I started to think alot about DOMs today as my shoulders are on fire from yesterday's workout. It is really a great feeling when you are really into lifting. You know when you change up a routine that your body is responding a bit when you hit a nice set of DOMs after the workout. The feeling is something I actually relish. I know to some it sounds strange, but I like the feeling alot. It lets me know that I've worked hard in the gym. I was talking to a friend who had a personal training session today. He recently lost his job and was telling me that he has no real motivation right now to workout. I was explaining to him that it is understandable, but this is the time to challenge himself. I explained that he needs to push through the mental blocks because if he is successful with this he will be consistent the majority of the time with ease. It is only when we are challenged with difficult times and respond appropriately that we can be proud of ourselves. |

Today was arms. Like yesterday, I did a biceps exercise and aimed for a weight I could lift for 50 reps, switched to a triceps exercise with a weight I could lift for 50 reps and continued this for 12 sets of each exercise. No rest between exercises or sets. I went to positive failure on all sets. As I left the gym I had a difficult time lifting my arms. What a wonderful feeling! |
