This guy walks up to me at 4:15 a.m. while I'm in the middle of a grueling Quad Blaster set. “Did you used to lift over at the Knott Avenue gym?” he inquires “Yeah, that was about a year ago though. I stopped going there because they never opened on time.” I replied “I thought it was you, but I honestly didn't recognize you.” he replied “I am the same person today as I was then, why wouldn't you recognize me?” I asked curiously “Dude, you've lost a ton of weight and you've gained alot of muscle since I last saw you.” he replied with enthusiasm “Really? You think I've lost alot of weight and gained mass?” I asked “Hell yes!” he replied At that point you struggle with what to say next. This is a message for every single shredder out there who is doubting themselves as they start a program. You don't get results overnight. Sometimes you don't even really recognize your own results. That's what the daily pictures are for. If you are not taking daily photos you are cheating yourself. Get to it today and don't miss a day ever. People notice you. They see what you are up to and they recognize the change that is taking place with your body. You might not see it, but other people do and that's one reason to stick with it. Is it possible to change and not notice it yourself? Hell yes! Should you be sticking with it regardless of your feelings about the changes in your body? Hell yes! Would it be tragic if you just gave up like alot of people? Hell yes! Keep repeating that over and over in your head–Hell yes! I get that we all have expectations for our own progress. I get that we might not even come close to living up to those expectations at first, but I also get that consistent application of the healthy way of life is going to make an eventual difference. Consistency and strong effort are the only ingredients that make up the successful transformation you are after. Look, I will be the first to tell you that I'm not truly satisfied with my progress after 274 days. I would have expected better results. At the same time, I realize that I have had to experiment to find what works for me. It has been a work in progress for the past 40 weeks of my life. So, if I measure success just on how I look in my pictures, I would have to say that I am not entirely pleased. However, I have learned from my mentor that success is measured in alot of other ways. You see I have had many things happen in the past 40 weeks that could have derailed me completely. My life hasn't been simple. I have had my ups and downs. There have been some emotional times. Through all of these I posted my blog daily and included my daily photo. I shared some of what was going on with me and at times, when it was too emotional for me to share, I kept it to myself. However, the journey I am on has been a successful one so far because my results don't just show in my physical appearance. My mental toughness has developed throughout the past 40 weeks. It is something I can carry with me as I go forward into other missions. I've learned what I am truly capable of. These are the things you need to learn to cherish. You need to learn to give yourself credit for these things that happen in your life that you fight through. You have to remember that when faced with difficulties you have a choice in how you handle them. It goes back to asking the right questions and giving the right answers. Shredders, can you make a transformation if you stick to it consistently? Hell yes! |

Today was another awesome workout. I got in my deadlifts and my Quad Blaster workout. I'm really feeling this workout routine I've been using. At the same time, the ART I've been doing with the doctor has been giving me some unexpected movement benefits. I am able to move with better alignment and on some exercises (deadlift being one) I can lift heavier weights due to the efficient movement of the muscles in my body. I've also experienced less cramping in my legs, something that has been a problem for me for a long time. The doctor also has me using a foam roller and that's an amazing thing as well. I highly recommend it. |

When you are faced with tough times in your life you have a choice to have it affect your workouts and nutrition or not. Making the right choice isn't always easy, but once you develop the discipline it becomes easier and easier. |

Ever wonder why people have a hard time expressing themselves? How about why people can't seem to get out what is on their mind at all? I've recently had this experience and for me, an expressive person, it is frustrating. I believe in my situation the issue is realism. The person I had trouble with just wasn't ready to be real about the situation. Rather than get out there what was on their mind they chose to say that they didn't know or weren't sure. The problem is that what they said they were doing contradicted their comment that they didn't know. I see realism as an issue in fitness as well. People tend to set drastic and unrealistic goals. I once had a 250 pound friend who wanted to get down to 165 pounds. After getting down to 230 pounds quickly, the progress slowed. This person got frustrated at the lack of progress and did a backslide on nutritional issues. Exercise soon followed suit. The cause of all this? Lack of realism. Had they been realistic they would have realized that weight always tends to come off fast at first. Later, when it slows down, the real work begins. By not having a realistic set of expectations my friend went off track quickly. We must set realistic goals and adjust them according to our real results. We must not expect miracles. While it is possible for miracles to happen, they are not the norm. We must understand (realistically) that it is going to take hard work to reach our goals, especially if they are a stretch like they should be. The amazing thing is that as you get more and more real about your goals you set more and more stretch goals. I believe this is because you begin to realize that you can and will hit any goal you set, so why not set goals that are a stretch? It is a change in mindset that leads you down the right path. |

Today I went for a nice 2 mile run in the neighborhood. |

Always set realistic goals that are a stretch but can be met. |

I am sure that when you read the title of today's post you immediately thought of body building. If you didn't, what's wrong with you? At the same time, if you didn't think of body building you were on the right track because I'm talking about the Pose Running Technique (http://www.posetech.com). This is something my doctor mentioned to me today. After examining me today (post run) she notes that my quads get extremely over stimulated from running. This eventually causes an imbalance in my hips and my entire lower body. She now has me doing foam rolling (feels great), more stretching (also feels great) and working on the Pose Running Technique. For those runners out there, take a look at the free videos on the site. They show you how to do the technique and why it works. It allegedly helps to avoid injury. My doctor says that this technique helps avoid the imbalances I am currently causing myself. The good news is that I can now resume running, but I have to work hard to stick to this technique. Apparently I am stressing out my calves way too much when I run and that's causing the problems I've been having. Now, for those of you who thought of body building when you read the title, that's the second part of today's post. Did you know that posing was a third of the score in body building competitions in the mid-80's and now it is only about 10%? Why would that be the case? Body building is supposed to be about how you show off your body. That's what posing is all about. So why drop the score down to 10% of the total? I am going to work heavily on my posing technique. I am in what you would call “pre-competition mode” because honestly, I have no desire to compete in a body building show, I want to win my division in a body building show. To do that I need to be at my best in every area. That's what I'm working on. I am alerting you all that my reveal is being delayed until August 1, 2008. This is necessitated by the fact that I will be on a business trip to Boston on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of next week, so doing my reveal on Thursday night when I get home is not what I want to do. Thus, I will delay it just 1 single day further. No, it is not for suspense. |

I had an intense morning workout session today. I maintained strict form on every exercise, maximizing time under tension. I was completely wasted at the end of the workout. The addition of a little more carbs this week seems to be helping the workouts alot. I had energy throughout the workout today. It was pretty incredible. |

Proper technique is important for so many reasons. Failing to adhere to proper technique can bring on hidden problems that you might never totally be aware of. |
