Mission 1, Day 43: Fruit day is coming soon!

December 8, 2007 By Michael Mahony Leave a Comment

Today was a good day for me.  I was on the higher protein day and I mostly ate chicken breast for the entire day.  I was very focused on keeping the fat at a minimum today because of Metabolic Surge and what was on the agenda for today.

I had a pretty good workout, but after the fact, I was disappointed at myself for not pushing as hard as I know I could.

 Exercise  Weight/Reps
 Incline DB Bench Press 40 x 15
40 x 15
40 x 12
 Seated Cable Rows 90 x 15
90 x 15
90 x 15

 DB Shoulder Press 35 x 15
35 x 15
35 x 12
35 x 10
 Wide Grip Lat Pulldown 100 x 15
100 x 12
80 x 15
80 x 15

Close grip BB bench press 85 x 15
85 x 15
85 x 15
85 x 12
 High pull     65 x 15
65 x 15
65 x 15
65 x 15

 Swiss Ball Crunches 15
15
15

I was pretty focused on feeling the mind to muscle connection today and noticed some interesting things.  When you focus on that connection you really feel the movement of the muscles.  You are able to correct your form more readily because of that connection. It is an interesting scenario and one I will explore in future workouts.

I have a feeling that Metabolic Surge has done a good job for me this week.  I will see on Sunday when I weigh and measure.  I am expecting decent, if not awesome, results.

I wanted to encourage you, dear reader, to visit the blogs in my sidebar, especially those under the RTP Group Shred area.  These are like-minded people who are busting their butts to lose the fat.  They can use the inspiration from your comments, so please visit their blogs and make comments.

A new podcast is coming on Sunday and the topic is…well, you will just have to wait and see.

Until tomorrow…

Mission 1, Day 42: I’m sad

December 7, 2007 By Michael Mahony Leave a Comment

I'm sad…very sad!  I realized today that tomorrow is NOT my all fruit day   Tomorrow is the low fat, low carb day where I focus on protein intake.  That makes me sad because I was really looking forward to eating a ton of fruit.  Oh well, it won't be until Saturday and I will live

Today was an all cardio day.  I am also starting to see some noticeable changes in my waistline that I'm liking.  I am very excited about getting to Sunday for my measurements.  I want to see how Metabolic Surge has been working for me.  I can tell you that I've started to feel a little fatigued, but not so bad that I can't be active.  Yes, my energy levels are a little low, but I'm finding that eating this way isn't as hard as I thought it was going to be.

This Hypertrophy workout I'm on is interesting because it really mixes things up.  I go from doing 5 reps on a workout to doing the exact workout with 15 reps to the exact workout doing 10 reps.   They even vary the rest periods.  It is really interesting and people I know who've tried it have gotten very good results.

I don't have alot left to say other than my internet problems should be permanently solved on Friday when I install the new cable modem.

Until tomorrow…

Mission 1, Day 41: Lift!

December 6, 2007 By Michael Mahony Leave a Comment

Here I am at the third straight day of very low carbs.  I am not feeling energy issues like I thought I would, which is amazing.  I've managed to keep my carbs to between 30 and 35 grams every single day so far.  That, too, amazes me because I thought it would be next to impossible.

I had an awesome workout today:

 Exercise  Weight/Reps
Squat 185 x 10
185 x 10
185 x 10
185 x 10
Deadlift Shrug 185 x 10
185 x 10
185 x 10
185 x 10

 Bulgarian Split Squats 25 x 10
25 x 10
25 x 10
25 x 10
 Step Ups 20 x 10
20 x 10
20 x 10
20 x 10

 Reverse Crunches 10
10
10

The deadlift shrug was sort of brutal.  The last time I did deadlifts I was at 195 x 10 for four sets.  I decided to drop the weight 10 pounds because of the extra time I'd have to execute with the shrug.  It was a smart move because by the 4th set, the deadlift was still doable, but the shrug was almost impossible and I barely completed it.  I am sure my traps are going to really hurt.

I have an all day planning session tomorrow that I am not looking forward to. I will have to plan my food supply very carefully or I will not have proper nutrition tomorrow. They will bring in food, but they always bring in things with alot of carbs. Also, they might bring in one meal and that's not going to be enough.

On Friday I will go through all the blogs I haven't been to all week and make comments. It is going to be fun. I always enjoy reading what's going on with the other Shredder Council members.

Until tomorrow…

Mission 1, Day 40: Reviewing the goals…reviewing the goals…reviewing the goals

December 5, 2007 By Michael Mahony Leave a Comment

Today was an all cardio day.  I worked long hours, so I ended up hitting the gym in the late afternoon for my cardio.  I worked very hard at increasing the intensity and got up to 9.0 mph for a short time.  Most of the intervals were a high of 8.5 mph, but for 3 intervals I hit that 9.0 mph mark.

Today I was reflecting on my past and how I don't ever want to weigh what I once did.  I know I won't ever go back to that.  At the same time, I was thinking about the present and how I'm eating.  I wondered why the low carb eating wasn't bothering me until it dawned on me–I've been cycling my carbs for a long time now and my body is definitely used to going 3 days with low carbs, but not as low as Metabolic Surge calls for.  I find myself looking forward to the all fruit day.  It can't come soon enough.  More importantly, the idea of the all protein day is awesome as well.

I did some work on my next podcast today.  I hope everyone likes it when I upload it this weekend.  I've been having major internet problems and think I need to have the modem replaced.  I will take care of that in the next 2 days so that I can be consistent with these entries.

Finally, thanks to everyone who has left me comments about the first podcast.  You are an inspiration to me.  As I look ahead to tomorrow and the workout I have planned, I am in awe of the fact that I will have to execute a deadlift along with a shoulder shrug in the same movement.  I will let you know how that goes.

Until tomorrow…

Mission 1, Day 39: Energy levels maintaining

December 4, 2007 By Michael Mahony Leave a Comment

Today was day 2 of the Metabolic Surge dietary program for me and thanks to alot of vegetables, my energy levels are maintaining at a high level.

I did 30 second intervals on a Treadclimber today.  It felt like it took longer to get my heart rate up, but I was able to maintain it at that level just as easily as the treadmill.  I am going to start rotating the machines I use for cardio to keep my body guessing.  Next will probably be the stationary bike.

I did some journaling today to clear my head as I head towards the midway point of my first mission.  I've started to set daily goals for myself that involve simple things like “I drank 148 ounces of water today” and “I ate 6 small, healthy meals today” so that I have some smaller goals that will lead me to the larger goal.  I've always found that technique to be effective.

I managed to post the podcast today and it appears that several people have listened to it.  I am planning the topic for the next podcast for next week.  I'm thinking that I may do a review of Optimum Anabolics because I've mentioned it here before or I may do a run down of some of my favorite exercises and why they are my favorite.  I have a few days to decide.

Until tomorrow…
