Today was my return to iron. I got back into the gym to lift and lift I did. The new workout is substantially shorter than my previous workout by 3 exercises. That makes alot of difference when you have to load and deload a bar. I truly enjoyed my first session of the week and I'm looking forward to two more identical sessions this week. I also had to return to the gym later in the afternoon to do my scheduled cardio session. I hate double gym trips, but it is the only way to get in extra cardio other than outdoor cardio and right now the weather isn't cooperating with that idea. I spent the day knocking off small tasks for work. These are the kinds of things that make a huge difference for others, but take me very little time at all to accomplish. I do this about every other week. I sit down with some major focus and just plow through my captured list of small tasks. When I was done today I went and processed all my meeting notes from last week into my GTD system. This system is what keeps me organized and afloat. I noticed an article on a body building forum about only being able to get 1 full body workout in a week when the man had intended to do 3. My initial thought was that at least he is working out 1 day a week, but my next thought has to do with making time for things that are important to you. Why the excuses? Why not just buckle down and make the time for the gym? I'm sure he could get up an hour earlier to fit in a full body workout more often. If he were to sit down and think about ways to accomplish more gym time, it would happen. My take is that it just isn't that important to him or he'd make the time.

Mike's Workout Log
Matty's Workout Log Oh yeah! We hit the iron and hard today. The program calls for me to drop down to 70% of my 1 rep maximum on all exercises and then aim for a certain repetition range on all exercises. It is very specialized and individualized. For instance, my optimal repetition range for the bench press is 6 to 8 repetitions, but Matty's on the same exercise is 3 to 5 repetitions. Another example is that on the leg extension my optimal repetition range is 9 to 12 repetitions while Matty's is 5 to 7 repetitions. This made the workout much more complicated, but I used our logs and logged this stuff down prior to the actual workout. I have to pay special attention to the maximum part of the range because that is where the weights increase. I honestly felt this was a pretty easy workout, but the majority of my exercises also call for me to up the weight in the next session. Matty felt the same way. He's gotten used to High Intensity Training and expected a tougher workout. My take is that we just came off a week's rest and the program is easing us into the workouts. That's the awesome nature of H.I.T., we control the pace. We will be upping the weights for our Thursday workout. |

M5:D2 (D410) Pumped up
Today is the second day of M5 and I am completely pumped up. Tomorrow will be the first weight training I've done in 9 days. I am excited to get back to hitting the iron. My son is particularly excited as well. This is the first time that we've done such extensive measurements on him. He wants to see some changes! I spent part of the morning doing affirmations. I've been working through the following today: Affirmations: I have large muscles that burn fat from my body with ease. I eat the right food in the right amount to continually build more muscle. I will post my affirmations as I use them. These have kept me very focused today. I changed things up this time around by taking a break between missions, but even then, I had to make that mission a "rest" mission so that I could get ready for M5 itself. I plan to knock off every single one of the goals listed in my mission goals. I am going to post them in my sidebar and you guys can follow the progress accordingly. I have these goals posted around in various places to remind myself what needs to get done. I am preparing for my first video podcast of M5 and wanted to ask your opinion. M5:D1 (D409) Gentlemen, start your engines
Today begins M5. I have already outlined my plans for M5. It is going to be an extremely intense 10 weeks (70 days) of training. I expect big things. My son, Matthew, will be joining me in this mission. He and I took measurements and logged everything down. We are ready to go. In 10 weeks we will have transformed our bodies even further than we have so far. It is going to be amazing. Stay tuned to this blog for more on this transformation. I spent the day doing family stuff. I took Matthew to his job (he referees ice hockey games) at 10:30 a.m. I stayed and watched both games because it made no sense to leave and come back. I enjoyed watching him do what he loves to do. I took some pictures of him in action and posted them on my Facebook. Have a look! After Matty and I came home, I sat and watched a movie with Alyssa. We caught up on the past couple of days. She was very talkative! After the movie, Alison and I went and got some shopping done. We hurried around because we had something to do later that night. In the evening I went to see my niece and her family at the BMX track in Orange, California. Jacob (my nieces son) was competing in a BMX race event. We took the entire family (including my daughter's boyfriend) with us. We all had a great time even though the night air was very cold. |

NOTE: This week training is scheduled for Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. It will switch to Monday, Wednesday and Friday most likely starting next week. |

Rest 4.5:D8 (D408) Persistence pays off
Those of you who are regular readers of this blog know that my son, Matthew, plays on a hockey team that has not won a single game this season. His teammates have a major problem in that they fail to execute anything they are taught during practice. It has frustrated the coaches beyond belief. Today we had another of our CAHA weekends. We were scheduled for 2 games. Our first game was against the #2 team in our division (#3 in the country). My son played his worst game of the year (as did the team) and we lost 16-0. After the game, the coach sat the kids down in the locker room and explained to them the things they needed to start doing better. He talked about earning the respect of other teams. He spoke about how they must turn things around and now. He let them know exactly what it was going to take for them to make a move and to earn some respect. He also asked them to play all 3 periods of the next game hard to show respect for his friend, our other coach, who wasn't present for the morning game due to work obligations. After that discussion we all went to breakfast and then on to the team manager's house. On the way to the team manager's house several parents called to complain about the long "tirade" of the coach. This created some major drama. The parents seem to have the opinion that the coach doesn't know what he is doing. I was quite amused in some respects by all of it. Prior to our evening game the same coach came in and gave the kids another speech. He basically made them tell everyone on the team what was something they had done wrong in the previous game and how they were going to fix that in the next game. He reminded them of their promise from the morning game. He pushed them to play all 3 periods hard. Well, those kids went out and took the ice against a team they lost to 13-1 just 3 weeks ago. After the first period we were down 2-1. After the second period we were down 2-1. The final score was a 3-2 loss for our team. So many firsts happened during this game: the first time we took the first shot on goal of the game, first time we had more than 15 shots on goal, first time in an official game where we scored more than 1 goal, first time we played all 3 periods of a game, first time we were in a game for all 3 periods. My comment is that the coach obviously figured out how to motivate the kids to do better. Persistence paid off. |

Rest 4.5:D7 (D407) Hectic day
Today was an extremely hectic day in my life. I started out the day knocking tasks off my list of things to accomplish. I was extremely focused and got alot of things completed. Next, I had to run to hockey practice by myself as my wife had a PTA Christmas party to attend. I handled all the equipment manager duties alone. As we have a game tomorrow morning (and evening), I had alot of gear to bring with me that I normally would not be bringing. As soon as hockey practice was over I had to head home with my son. I dropped him at home and took my daughter to her boyfriend's house so they could hang out with his parents and then I headed off for the 30 minute drive to the Christmas party. I had a great time at the party because I knew everyone who was there. The party ended around 10:30 p.m. and then we had to go pick my daughter up from her boyfriend's house. |
