May 16, 2015 By Michael Mahony, ISSA CPT Leave a Comment

_reality-check-rant

Sit back and prepare yourself because you are about to receive a reality check!

  • The problem is that you don't try hard enough.
  • You need to do a better job of planning your meals
  • You skip the gym way more than anyone should
  • The motivation needs to come from within
  • You don't need to be an inspiration to be successful
  • People really aren't watching, but only because they know you're going to fail
  • Every plan you've ever tried has not worked
  • The common denominator in every failed plan you've tried is you
  • Goals need to be tracked
  • The weights don't lift themselves

Now what are you going to do to change things up?

Pondering the Past

May 15, 2015 By Michael Mahony, ISSA CPT Leave a Comment

_pondering-the-past

I have been doing a lot of thinking lately, pondering the past. I think about all the wasted time and squandered opportunities and I get angry. At the same time, I realize that the journey I have been on is one I needed to go on. Had things been different the results would not be the same. I would not have met some of the people I came in contact with. At the same time, I wonder where I would be if I hadn't been so damned lazy.

The truth is that I have been addicted to “getting in shape” and until this year I have not really made serious progress towards that goal. I have had so many mental blocks that I've allowed to get in my way. Then, at the end of 2014, I realized I needed to grab hold of the focus in my life and make some changes. The changes I made were not strictly about “getting in shape” as you will soon see.

Taking Back Control of My Life

As many know, I went through a bitter divorce. It beat me up and spit me out. I had so many insecurities as a result of that divorce. Things would simply take control of me and I would be powerless over them. That is until I made the decision to take back the control in my life. I stopped letting others tell me what to do or how to act and suddenly I had an amazing woman in my life. I stopped letting others discourage me from my goals and suddenly I had my focus back.

Setting Realistic Long and Short Term Goals

After regaining control of my life I began setting goals. Some of them are for the short term while others are for the long term. It is an amazing feeling to script out what your future should look like. My goals include personal things, fitness related things, business related things and anything that will make me a better person.

Pondering the Past

As I ponder the past I realize that I need to embrace it–all of it. That past is what made me who I am today. Without the trials and tribulations I experienced I would not be as strong as I am now. I would not have the control over things that I have now. I would not be the person I am now. So ponder your own past. Own it. It is yours and yours alone.

How Music Motivates Me During Training

May 7, 2015 By Michael Mahony, ISSA CPT Leave a Comment

music-motivation

To me music is essential to a good workout. It is just as important to me as the pump or the time in the gym itself. In today's article I want to explain exactly how music motivates me during training.

Shut Out the World

A gym is generally a very loud place and it is generally playing some very loud, generic music. When I plug in my headphones and turn on my favourite playlist I am able to block out the world. I can then focus on the task at hand, which is lifting weights. Nothing else gets in the way at that point. I am able to completely block everything else out.

Dig Deep

Music tends to effect me in an emotional way. I have designed my playlists to evoke a certain emotion while in the gym. This enables me to dig deeper than normal. I can push myself harder than ever when the right music is playing. I guess it goes along with shutting out the world because it always makes a huge difference in my training.

The Extra Shove

When I am working on pushing out the final reps of an exercise, music gives me that extra shove. It really takes me to a new level of effort. It is interesting how well it works. For some reason the little voice that says “You have nothing left, so give up now” isn't able to be louder than the music. I have honestly pushed out 3 or 4 extra repsI suggest you give thsi a try. as a result of great music. Give it a try if you consistently have trouble going to failure.

The Combining of Passions

Music has always been a passion of mine. Training is a newer passion of mine. Combining the two passions seems to make both of them greater and more enjoyable.

Does Sex Change Weight Training?

April 10, 2015 By Michael Mahony, ISSA CPT Leave a Comment

_sex-weights

To men trying to see gains in the gym the question often arises “How does sex effect my weight training gains” and today I am going to take a closer look at that. I will look at your sex drive, sex and strength and indirect effects of training on your sex life.

Your Sex Drive

The main question is does training effect how often you want to have sex?

The main component to consider is testosterone. The higher the testosterone level the higher the sex drive in a man. This means that anything that will increase your natural testosterone levels will also increase your sex drive.

It is a proven fact that a man lifting heavy will see an increase in testosterone levels. Squats and deadlifts seem to have the maximum effect on sex drive.

Sex and Strength

For the most part, more frequent sex will result in gains at the gym. The one time it might not be the case is if you just finish having sex and then hit the gym and that is because in many men sex causes muscular fatigue. Beyond that one issue, sex should help increase your strength.

Indirect Effects of Training on Your Sex Life

Many of us are striving to get extremely low body fat levels. The lower a man goes with his body fat the less likely he will be to want sex. It is how the body works. In addition, many people are using anabolics. These will change your hormone balance and that can adversely effect your sex life as well.

Make sure you monitory the things you are doing and see how that corresponds to your sex drive. This will help you fix any problems when they show their face.
