Random Thoughts

May 8, 2015 By Michael Mahony, ISSA CPT Leave a Comment

_random-thoughts

Today I just have a series of random, bodybuilding-related thoughts to throw at you.

  • The amount of effort you put into a workout is proportionate to the level of positive results you will achieve
  • You don't have to starve to lose fat. In fact, starving is going to stop you from losing fat.
  • Sometimes it really is hard to motivate yourself to go to the gym. Don't beat yourself up, just fix the issue.
  • The choice to use gear is a personal one. If you make the choice to do so, at least be honest about it.
  • Contrary to popular opinion, weight training will not make a woman bulky.
  • Less fat means more healthy and that's the desired state of being.
  • You make time for what is important to  you. Missing the gym? It mustn't be that important to you.
  • Check your ego at the door when entering the gym and you will get a better session in.
  • Have fun because life is too short.
  • Keep your goals in front of you at all times.
  • Your level of intensity is probably not the maximum you can achieve.
  • Nobody on social media really cares if you are in “beast mode”
  • Nobody on social media really cares to see your mirror selfies
  • No matter how much you life, someone, somewhere can lift more

Tips on Social Media for Bodybuilders

February 20, 2015 By Michael Mahony, ISSA CPT Leave a Comment

social-media-tips

Not too long ago I did an article The Expanded Do's and Don'ts of Social Media in Bodybuilding. It was an extension of an article by Louis Uridel entitled The Do's and Don'ts of Social Media in Bodybuilding.  In today's article I want to offer up some more tips on social media for bodybuilders to help with gaining a following. With my background in social media and technology coupled with my knowledge of bodybuilding, I hope you gain some insight.

 Post Your Training Tips

People are looking for information and when they see that you are a bodybuilder they will want to get some advice from you. Take the time to post your advice on training. If you have a unique way of doing single arm dumbbell rows send that out. Each tip you give can later be collected and used in a way I will discuss later in this article.

Post Progress Pictures

People want to see that even you, the ripped bodybuilder, sometimes carry some fat. They want to see how you can transform your body in a short period of time by being disciplined.

Don't Badmouth Others

Be honest, but don't destroy other people using your social media accounts. Use your following to build people up, not tear them down. Don't have anything good to say, keep it to yourself!

Collect All Your Tips

If you follow my advice to post training tips eventually you will have a large collection of tips. Pull those together and put out a cheap eBook with all your training advice contained inside. You will make a little bit of money and expand your reach.

Promote Yourself — infrequently

Social media is a good place to promote yourself, but do so sparingly. As Gary Vaynerchuk says, “jab, jab, jab, jab, right hook!” The right hook is when you deliver the promotion of yourself. Give things to people with the jabs and then promote yourself. They will be more likely to buy from you if you build their trust.

Bodybuilding Follows on Social Media

February 13, 2015 By Michael Mahony, ISSA CPT Leave a Comment

social-media-article-bodybuilding

Social media has taken over the world. You cannot escape it. It appear on television advertisements, in magazines and even on delivery vehicles. Where it was once rare to have a published website URL on any of these items, now you have the URL plus the social media icons for the company/person in question. It is my belief that social media is a great place to get to know and learn about people in the bodybuilding and fitness niche. What follows is a list of people in the industry I think you should follow on Twitter.

  • Phil Heath (@philheath) – 3 time Mr. Olympia and current reigning Mr. Olympia. He is fairly active on Twitter and gives some great tips as well.
  • Dexter Jackson (@MrOlympia08) – former Mr. Olympia and one helluva bodybuilder. Always a factor in the competitions he partakes in.
  • Louis Uridel (@TheBigSexy200X) – bodybuilder from San Diego and active interviewer for Muscular Development. He is funny, honest and gives great advice.
  • Jay Cutler (@Mrojaycutler) – former 4 time Mr. Olympia. He is a great guy and has some great insights to share.
  • Hany Rambod (@hanyrambod) – top preparation coach. He has coached both Jay Cutler and Phil Heath. Amazing guy with great information.
  • Chris Cormier (@RDCormier) – The Real Deal. He says it like it is.
  • Chad Nicholls (@ChadTheDietDoc) – He is an amazing contest preparation coach and a regular on Pro Bodybuilding Weekly.
  • MuscleContest (@MuscleContest) – The California branch of the NPC. Many contests are promoted by this group.
  • Pete Ciccone (@PeteCiccone) – IFBB Pro and owner of 619Muscle. Great advice. Personal insights.
  • Erin Stern (@ErinFAST) – Figure Olympia Champion. She gives some great tips.
  • Tom Venuto (@tomvenuto) – Author of several books including Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle. He is The Guru on fat loss. Nicest guy you will meet on Twitter.

This list is just a starter. I will publish more next month. Enjoy!
