Saturday Sharing: Thoughts on Competing

August 17, 2013 By Michael Mahony, ISSA CPT 1 Comment

Why do a bodybuilding competition

Discuss entering a physique contest with even the most hardened gym veteran and you will begin to hear a whole host of excuses. They can't fathom standing up in front of people in speedos, etc. The excuses are just that–excuses. I personally believe that a physique competition is something you should consider if your goal is to get into top shape. It is motivational and pushes you to do your best.

When I needed to get the weight off and build muscle I set a deadline (a show date) and then advertised it to every single person who would listen. There was no way I was pulling out. It got me focused and gave me a reason to suffer through some of the tough times you go through when getting into great shape. If you are thinking about doing this, here is the approach I recommend:

The Goal. Set a goal by looking at where you want to be and how long you think it will take to get there. Now look for a show that is in your area around the time of the goal completion. I recommend not going past your goal date, but a couple weeks earlier is OK.

Advertise. Once the goal is set make sure to tell every single person you know. Explain to them that you are going on stage no matter what. If you don't meet your goals you will go up and be humiliated. If you meet your goals you will go up and feel great about yourself.

Ride the Accountability. After you advertise you are going to have people asking about your progress all the time. Ride that accountability wave to success. Take advantage of the fact that you have created so many accountability partners. Use that to your advantage and your success will be virtually guaranteed.

Saturdays Will Be Sharing Days at Fitness Expose

August 11, 2013 By Michael Mahony, ISSA CPT 1 Comment

saturdaysharing-changesHere at Fitness Expose we are always striving to find new information to share with you. Friday's used to be YouTube video day. I would record a rant about something and then post it here for you to enjoy. That will still happen at random, but now Saturday will be video day.

Saturday Sharing was born more than a year ago as a way to get you all to share my content on your blog. It was a miserable failure to be quite honest. Now I am going to use Saturday to share my thoughts on bodybuilding and fitness with you. I will record a video each week and post it here. I will tell you as raw as I can what I feel about the subject being covered. It is completely non-scripted. It comes right off the top of my head…I am getting things off my chest.

If you enjoy the video I ask that you share it with others. If there are topics you want to hear about, let me know by sending me an email. I will do my best to answer any questions you have.

Musclecast Video Program Coming Soon

June 26, 2013 By Michael Mahony, ISSA CPT 1 Comment

musclecast_logo

For a long time now I have tried to come up with the the best way to share all the knowledge I have in my head. I use this blog, medium.com and some guest blogging appearances to do this, but it just doesn't seem to be enough. After giving this a lot of thought I have come up with something amazing.

Announcing The MuscleCast!

I have decided to begin recording a video podcast that I will call The MuscleCast. I will secure interviews with industry professionals, share workouts and just give you my opinion on the latest bodybuilding and fitness news. I have not yet determined the location where I will host The MuscleCast but you will always be able to get the latest episodes right here at Fitness Expose.

How Can You Help?

You can help me out by suggesting some topics you'd like to see me cover. Tell me what your favorite topics are. Keep me informed of your interests.  By doing so I will be able to provide you with the content YOU want to see.

Interviews and More!

As stated, I plan to secure interviews with some of the top people in the bodybuilding industry. Up and comers will be interviewed so that you can see what it takes to make it in this industry. I will cover topics like training, nutriion, contest preparation and more. I will show you training techniques and explain them to you in detail. I will demonstrate sample workout plans for lagging body parts. Really the sky is the limit with this medium.

Sharing the Knowledge

I have built up a bunch of knowledge over the years. I have had so many people help me out that I just want to pass on the knowledge. It is really simple. I sincerely hope you will learn from The MuscleCast

Frequency

I am currently planning to do a new episode every two weeks. Who knows if that will hold true, but I am going to give it my best shot.

Watch my preview video

I did a very quick Mobli video with my thoughts on the new podcast. You can watch it here.

Why Not Fail?

June 21, 2013 By Michael Mahony, ISSA CPT 1 Comment

failure

It is a discussion that has gone on for decades–train to failure or not? There are good arguments on both sides but I have to ask “Why not fail?” Yes, I am a proponent of taking sets to failure. Should it be every set? Maybe. However, I know that some amount of sets taken to failure is necessary to build muscle. I can tell you this from my own personal experience. I don't care what magazine articles say, what books say or what anyone tells you because I have lived it.

What Happens When You Fail?

As I am sure you are aware, muscle growth occurs when muscle fibers are torn and forced to rebuild themselves. Going to failure insures that the muscle fibers are sufficiently damages to force the body to make them grow. You also tip the metabolic scale when you push things that hard. Intensity can be had in many different ways. Failure is just one of those many ways. However, it is quite an effective way. I would not recommend taking many sets to failure, but I do think it has its place.

What Is Failure?

Failure is often misunderstood. Most people will stop far short of failure unless they truly get what failure is. I've seen it when training clients. I can clearly see they have more in them, but they stop short. They think they are fooling me, but I know better. Failure is when you cannot move the weight any longer with correct form. When you reach that point you can say you truly failed on your set and walk away a happy trainer. Anything less than that is not failure at all.

This is a seemingly lost art. Apparently intensity isn't something people really strive for today. In a recent article I discussed the origin of intensity in bodybuilding. I talked about how we can get that back. It is something you definitely should read.

What’s Your Story?

June 14, 2013 By Michael Mahony, ISSA CPT 1 Comment

whats_your_story

What is your story? What brings you to your interest in bodybuilding and getting into shape? Everyone has their own story, what is your's?

My Story

I was a nice 210 lbs when I had to go in for back surgery. I had a 12 week recuperation period after the surgery. I gained so much weight that I was embarrassed by how I looked. I had to lose weight. I went to work doing the best I could. I got myself down to 240 lbs. and couldn't crack the barrier. It was then that I started working with Chris Albert.

Chris took my stats down and I was at 30% body fat. I weighed 242 lbs. We set a goal that I would get on a stage for a bodybuilding competition. I managed to be at 10% body fat by the time I stepped on stage. My weight was 210 lbs. Pay attention to these numbers! When I began working with Chris I weighed 242 lbs., 30% body fat which means I had 168 lbs. of lean mass. When I hit the stage on April 13, 2012 I was 210 lbs., 10% body fat which means I had 189 lbs. of lean mass. I had lost 32 lbs on the scale but gained 21 lbs. of lean mass!

What Happens Now?

After meeting a goal like I did, what is next? For me I didn't feel like I had done my preparation for the competition as well as I could. I decided to enter another competition 6 weeks later. I walked on stage at 215 lbs and 9% body fat. That amounts to 196 lbs. of lean body mass which was a gain of another 7 lbs. in just 6 weeks.

For me I just keep coming up with new goals. Now my goal is to be about 225 lbs. and 7% body fat. That would be a solid 209 lbs. of lean body mass! That is the goal, but I have subgoals like improve my chest and improve my arms. The main objective is to be lean and massive.
