But he uses steroids!

March 20, 2013 By Michael Mahony, ISSA CPT 1 Comment

Anabolic-Steroids

I hear that exclaimed all the time about someone who is jacked — “But he uses steroids!” Like somehow that negates the hard work he has done to get to where he is.  People seem to be of the belief that all you do is take some drugs and grow like a weed. People seem to think that the training and diet are secondary to the drugs. That simply isn't true. I will attempt to give you a very brief overview of anabolic steroids and their effects in this article.

What Are Anabolic Steroids?

Anabolic steroids are steroid hormones based on androgen testosterone. They are also known as AAS (anabolic androgenic steroids). AAS is also known as performance enhancing drugs.

What Anabolic Steroids Do

Anabolic steroids increase protein synthesis. This means that the body is more easily able to utilize the protein you feed it. In addition they emphasize masculine characteristics like hair growth and vocal chords.

How Anabolic Steroids Work

Anabolic steroids have an effect on muscle mass and strength through two processes. AAS will cause an increase in the production of proteins, which are the building blocks of muscle. AAS will also block the effect of the hormone cortisol on muscles. This will cause existing muscle to be broken down at a slower rate. This is known as a muscle saving tendency. AAS will also lead to cells differentiating into muscle more readily than fat. In a nutshell, AAS will encourage muscle growth.

The Magic Pill Syndrome

The reason, in my opinion, that so many people think that all you have to do is take “steroids” and you get big is that they want that “magic pill” that solves all their problems. I am here to tell you that pill does not exist in any form. Yes, AAS will give you an edge you might not have had, but it doesn't come without risks (risks I cannot go into in this article, but will in a future article). However, you still need to eat clean and train hard in order to see gains. In fact, in my opinion, if you use AAS and you do NOT eat clean and train hard you are wasting your time completely.

Stop looking for a magic pill. You can take an AAS and grow, but you aren't going to do it with the AAS alone. Get yourself into the gym and get back to the basics. That's what works. It worked for the old time bodybuilders and it will work for you as well.

2013 Arnold Classic Results

March 4, 2013 By Michael Mahony, ISSA CPT Leave a Comment

arnoldclassic.jp

The 2013 Arnold Classic was held this past weekend and I have a review of the results for you below. I made some predictions in my 2013 Arnold Classic Preview post. Let's see how I did.

Men's Bodybuilding

The field was quite impressive. I  correctly predicted the top 2 spots.

1. Dexter Jackson

dexter-arnold

Dexter just looked shredded. He came in with impressive conditioning and was head and shoulders better than his competition. He looked like he came to win and win he did. As you will see from the picture to the left, he is well proportioned and balanced. His quads look tremendous. His calves are amazing. His traps are massive and I am partial to that look myself.

I've trained alongside Dexter at Gold's Gym – Venice and he is a huge guy (obviously). His work ethic is amazing. He is also one of the nicest guys you will ever meet. I say congratulations to Dexter on his impressive 4th Arnold Classic victory. He deserved the win this year.
.

2. Ben Pakulski

pakulski-arnoldBen Pakulski is a rising start in the IFBB. He is an amazing bodybuilder who has improved so much in the past year. I saw Ben compete at the 2012 Flex Pro show and he has improved so much.

Ben has impressive quads. They blow everyone away. His 2nd place finish here along with his “Most Muscular” award have solidified his place in the IFBB ranks. I will say that I think Ben could use some work on his arms. They need to be larger for him to win more consistently.

Ben has his MI40 workout plan that is sold on the web. It is an amazing program that I have previously reviewed. I would recommend the program to anyone wanting great growth.

3. Tony Freeman

freeman-arnoldTony Freeman took 3rd. Many thought before the show that he would place at least 2nd, but Ben Pakulski took care of that.

Tony has consistently been at the top of IFBB shows for years. He is known as the X-Man for a reason. His physique is the classic X shape. I am not a huge fan of Tony, but even I have to admit that he looked incredible for this show. He did the work necessary to place high and it paid off.

Tony took home $50,000 for his efforts. Not bad for a weekend of work (yeah right!).

Women's Figure

I was slightly off on this one. I predicted Erin Stern would be #1 and Heather Dees would be #2, but the actual results were slightly different.

1. Candice Keene

keene-arnoldCandice Keene came to win. She looked in such great shape. I was amazed at her conditioning and apparently so were the judges.

Candice surprised everyone by taking the top spot in this rather competitive field of women. She obviously put in some hard work and managed to beat her competition.

2. Heather Dees

dees-arnoldHeather Dees claimed the second spot as I predicted. She looked wonderful. She is always consistent and puts in the hard work. I was very impressed with her physique this time around. She has improved tremendously.

Heather impressed the judges with her physique as well. She easily took the second spot.

3. Erin Stern

stern-arnoldErin Stern was my pick for the top spot, but she claimed the third spot in this show. She looked good, but both Keene and Dees were slightly better. I am sure the judges had a tough time with these placements.

Erin is always at the top of these things. She is one of the best figure competitors in the field these days and I look for her to consistently stay here.

Conclusion

The 2013 Arnold Classic was a hotly contested show from every division. It usually is. I am hoping to attend the show in 2014. For now, enjoy the pictures that are available on Bodybuilding.com.

2013 Arnold Classic Preview

February 28, 2013 By Michael Mahony, ISSA CPT 1 Comment

arnoldclassic.jp

The 2013 Arnold Classic takes place this coming weekend. It is shaping up to be an amazing show. Bodybuilding.com will have the webcast live throughout the weekend. It is a great way to catch the competition and see all the competitors live.

Men's Bodybuilding

The competitors in the Men's Bodybuilding category are:

Fouad Abiad
Darrem Charles
Toney Freeman
Marcus Haley
Dexter Jackson
Michael Kefalianos
Cedric McMillan
Ben Pakulski
Ed Nunn
Ronny Rockel
Fred Smalls
Hidetada Yamagishi

My prediction for how the Top 3 will pan out is pretty simple. I think we will see Dexter Jackson taking first place, Ben Pakulski taking second place and Hidetada Yamagishi taking third place. I know my third place pick might seem strange, but I believe Hide will come in on target and blow away other competitors who were looking for that third place finish.

Women's Figure

Like the Men's Bodybuilding section, the Women's Figure is loaded with big name competitors. The list of competitors who will be present are:

Ava Cowan
Heather Dees
Olga Gallardo
Mallory Haldeman
Aleisha Hart
Candice John
Candice Keene
Candice Lewis
Kamla Macko
Camala Rodriguez
Giada Simari
Nicole Sims
Erin Stern
Gennifer Strobo
Alea Suarez
Ann Titone
Natalie Waples

I am going to predict Erin Stern takes first place, Heather Dees will take second and Mallory Haldeman will take third. It is going to be an exciting battle, that is for sure.

Conclusion

The Arnold Classic is one of the major shows of the year in the IFBB. The competition is always fierce and this year will be no different. It is always surprising what actually happens at these shows. Anybody could take it depending upon how they show up. Keep an eye on Bodybuilding.com for coverage this entire weekend. You will not be disappointed.

Operation Get Swole: Reloaded!

February 24, 2013 By Michael Mahony, ISSA CPT 1 Comment

OperationGetSwoleBanner

Operation Get Swole was launched as a clean bulkng mission and also a test for my contest preparation strategies. Unfortunately, as I mentioned in my initial report, life began to get in the way immediately. I had to make some major decisions that took my focus off the task at hand and now I am done with that distraction. I am now ready to focus on my contest preparation strategies and getting into the leanest shape I've ever been in over the next 8 weeks. From today through April 21, 2013 I will be working hard to make a difference with my body and I will be sharing my successes and failures right here on this site.

Fail Many Times

Success is just a string of failures that you learn from until you manage to get it right. I am not afraid to admit to these failures because I know they have taught me the things I need to know in order to succeed. The plan remains exactly as I originally outlined. I am simply reloading and refocusing on the goal at hand. This time I will forge ahead regardless of the circumstances. Life promises to be difficult in front of me, but I am ready to tackle the challenges head on and get this task done.

Let's Learn Together

I would really love the encouragement and support of my readers. We can learn together as I go through this process. It is going to be an amazing laboratory experiment. My good friend, Carlos DeJesus, would say this is an Experiment of One. It is about me figuring out what works and what does not work for me. It is my body and only I can tell what is working properly. I am trying many different strategies, but they are not haphazard. They have been chosen because of previous feedback my  body has given me. For instance, I know that I can train my biceps heavy and get no results or I can train them light and get no results, but when I train them twice in a week — once heavy and once for the pump — I see immediate changes in them.

Accountability

Hold me accountable to my plans. I am setting them out and want to be held accountable for their completion. It is all about getting this done and getting it done now. Stop by and read the blog. Follow me on Twitter — @mikemahony. You will be able to keep an eye on my progress and you can make comments on all the Operation Get Swole posts.

Bodybuilding Laboratory

Fitness Expose has changed its focus in 2013. It is now a bodybuilding laboratory and I am the lab rat. I am going to make major changes to my body this year. I will grow bigger and get more defined. I will keep that appearance even when not preparing for a contest. I will give you articles that teach you how to do the same thing. I will shatter the bodybuilding myths and promote the reputable information. We will still discuss the reputable few. We will remain focused on integrity and honesty. Let's get this laboratory into high gear!

Operation Get Swole Week 1 Report

February 8, 2013 By Michael Mahony, ISSA CPT 1 Comment

Operation get Swole

This is the end of Week 1 of Operation Get Swole. As mentioned in another post, the mission didn't start off well. Some unforeseen circumstances that were not part of my plan got in the way, but I didn't quite and now know I will just have to push harder.

Nutrition Update

I have been eating 300 grams of protein daily and taking in 200 grams of carboydrates. I have kept on track with my supplementation (all of it). My water intake is up to 1 gallon a day now (again).

Mental Update

This is the key element for me. I think this is where most people fail. During my last contest preparation cycle I had to drop out because of some major personal issues. This time the week started with some issues that I had not foreseen, but instead of giving in to them I made a concerted effort to focus more. My mindset is strong right now. I want this and I am going to get it. I have had major stress with work issues, but I am tackling those things as well. Keeping your head in the game is going to be one major key to your success. Contest preparation is about convincing yourself that you can and will do whatever it takes.
