Nutritional Planning for My Future

February 8, 2011 By Michael Mahony, ISSA CPT 3 Comments

As I mentioned in a previous article, I have been working my own Experiment of One for a long time now. During that time I have learned what works well for my body and what does not. My only issue has been actually sticking to the plan. I spent some time reviewing my past performance and figured out where the pitfalls were. I am now going to execute a plan that not only addresses fat loss issues, but also addresses the ability to adhere to the program for long periods of time.

Now, like a workout routine, I have found that it is important to change up your nutritional strategy on a cyclical basis.  I wrote out my plan and set a date to start it (this past Sunday). I then came into contact with the Lean Hybrid Muscle guys, Elliott Hulse and Mike Westerdal, via a video they had prepared for the launch of their new product, Lean Hybrid Muscle Reloaded (a review of that product will be forthcoming in the next few months).  To say I was a little shocked is putting it mildly.  Other than the fasting day they inserted, they are pretty must using the same nutritional program I had planned for myself.

After a discussion with Tom Venuto, I have adjusted my calories a little to accelerate fat loss, but here is the plan so far.  I am going to cycle my carbs over a 7 day period.  I will also be cycling my total caloric intake over that same 7 day period.  Monday and Tuesday will be low carb, high fat and high protein days (55/15/30 protein/carbs/fat) with 2100 total calories.  I will then fast from my final meal on Tuesday until 6 p.m. on Wednesday.  This part might only be temporary as my original plan called for a 40/40/20 day on Wednesday, so we shall see.  Thursday and Friday will see low carb, low fat and high protein (75/15/10 protein/carbs/fat) with 2300 calories.  I will then have a refeed day every Saturday with a 40/50/10 (protein/carbs/fat) ratio and 2500 calories.  Depending upon how “carbed up” I feel after Saturday, I will either do the same on Sunday or switch to a 40/40/20 ratio for Sunday.

The idea that I am keeping carbs very low for 5 days is daunting, but at the same time, the mini-cycles where the calories and the ratios change has me convinced that I will be able to stick to the program. That is going to be the key for me because I already workout like a beast. I believe that my body will react quite well with this system. It is sort of a modified Anabolic Diet program, modified to eliminate the ton of fat that program allows.

One final thing: I have started taking Shakeology from Beachbody.  They claim it will help suppress cravings and give me energy.  I will tell you that it tastes great. I've been on it for 2 days now. I will give a detailed description of my experience with Shakeology next week.

The Fat Burning Machine Merges!

January 26, 2011 By Michael Mahony, ISSA CPT Leave a Comment

Since 2007 I have maintained a blog at http://www.thefatburningmachineblog.com and have finally decided that it would be best to merge that site with this one.  My focus has been more on this site and all the ideas I have revolve around this site, so to save some money, I recently imported all the posts from that site to this one.  You can reach these posts at The Fat Burning Machine Category Page.  I am sure you will find some enjoyable reading within those posts.

I currently plan to go back through those posts and do some follow up posts that contain links to the old content.  It will be fun to revisit those posts and will give you, the reader, some excellent new resources that I have collected over the past 4 years.

Thank you for being a loyal supporter.

Massnutrition.com: Stay away if you know what’s good for you!

February 18, 2010 By Michael Mahony, ISSA CPT 2 Comments

Like alot of you, I am always checking out supplement prices trying to find the best deal.  I was looking for the workout stack from Scivation with the two products:  Xtend and Vasocharge.  After searching the web I determined that the cheapest price came from massnutrition.com.  I placed my order and waited for the product to arrive.

The first problem that I ran into was that their website does not show my order history properly.  It shows my last order being over 2 years ago despite my having an email showing my latest order.  I then emailed support@massnutrition.com and asked them for a tracking number.  I got no response at all.

The product arrived at my home on Friday afternoon, February 12, 2010.  On Saturday morning I cracked open both products.  The Xtend was perfect and I was able to mix up a batch.  I then opened up the Vasocharge and found it to be nothing but clumps (see picture below).

CLUMP
Notice how it is a bunch of solid lumps and not powder like it is supposed to be?

I immediately emailed support@massnutrition.com and let them know (per their website instructions) that there was a problem with the product.  When Tuesday morning rolled around and I still hadn’t heard back, I emailed them again.

I received a response from them a short while later.

Upon providing them with the information they requested I received the following email.

Can you believe this?  They want me to deal with the manufacturer for a product that has not yet expired and was purchased from them a mere few days before!

I explained to them that I was not happy with their suggested resolution.  I was promptly ignored.

Thankfully, Scivation is a wonderful company.  I emailed them and received an immediate (within 30 seconds) response from their Director of Sales.  He agreed to replace the Vasocharge free.  He didn’t ask me to ship him the bad product.  He simply asked to see my receipt from massnutrition.com and for my shipping address.  I even got an email from their CEO making sure I was taken care of properly.  Their service at Scivation is awesome!

Be warned!  Do not deal with massnutrition.com!  They have terrible customer service.  They will not assist  you if there is a problem.  Steer clear of this nightmare of a place.

Social Media: The New Fitness Buzz Word

October 13, 2009 By Michael Mahony, ISSA CPT Leave a Comment

Social Media is taking the internet by storm the past year.  It has grown from something only the in crowd knew about to something your grandmother is talking about.  It is no surprise that the fitness industry is embracing the social media storm and running with it.

It is now commonplace for fitness professionals to stay in contact via Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.  Many of them have embraced the simplicity of posting a video to discuss an important fitness topic.  This is all wonderful for the people who need this information.  It is so much easier to get real time feedback on fitness issues now.

I personally use video at my fitness accountability blog, http://thefatburningmachineblog.com and I find it to be very rewarding.  It is a great way to connect with my readers and it gives them a glimpse into my personality.

I am also using social media as I move towards my first ever body building competition in August 2010.  I am tweeting updates with the hashtag #bbmjm and posting blogs both here and at http://thefatburningmachineblog.com.  Through the use of social media, I have managed to create a network of accountability partners who are following my progress and encouraging me to achieve my goals.  It is exciting and rewarding at the same time.

I believe that social media is the ultimate fitness tool.  It puts you in touch with hundreds or even thousands of people all at one time.  Your message gets distributed in a viral fashion.  It is incredible.

When I think back to the early 1900’s and how slow information travelled and now, in 2009, how information is out there immediately, I have to smile.  I knew that bodybuilding.com got raided by the FDA before it was announced on my local news station.  I found out through social media.  I personally tweeted the winner of Mr. Olympia 2009 the minute it was announced.

There are many people who feel that Twitter is dying, but I disagree.  I like the idea of being able to give up to the minute input on a workout or other fitness related endeavor.  In fact, this gives me a new idea.  I might just update Twitter during my workouts.  I can talk about how I am feeling mentally and physically.  I can post what is going through my mind at that exact moment.  If that works I might just add a Twitter update page on this site.  It will be a place where you can go and read my entire Twitter stream all at once.

The ideas on how to use social media are countless.  Take some time to think it through and leave me some comments on what you thought up.

Use Your Head

August 26, 2009 By Michael Mahony, ISSA CPT Leave a Comment

scamsScams infiltrate every type of business, but for some reason, it seems extremely easy for people to scam you in the fitness industry.  I personally think it is because of so much misinformation that it is easier for people to be scammed.

Most people believe almost everything they hear.  They think that because someone is online and offering advice they are somehow an expert or a guru.  To me, a guru is someone who has accomplished something major in their field.  Tom Venuto is a guru.  Skip Lacour is a guru.  Carlos DeJesus is a guru.  They have all accomplished incredible things in their field.  This is why I call myself a “fitness guru wannabe” because I want to accomplish major things in this field, but have not yet done so.  I am honest and let people know my credentials right up front.

If you are sick of scams in the fitness industry, you are the key.  Scammers won’t exist if people aren’t allowing themselves to be scammed.  Make sure that you are checking the credentials of every single person you take advice from.  Realize that if someone tells you one way is the right way (and it is always their way that is the right way), be skeptical immediately.  Ask alot of questions before you plunk down any cash.  Look to reliable sources of information before committing to anything on the internet.

If, despite taking such precautions, you are still scammed, don’t despair.  Take advantage of the guarantees that are attached to these products. Better yet, do your internet research before you buy anything.  It pays to be careful these days.

The best advice I can give you is take advantage of social networks.  Become friends with these alleged gurus and find out what they are like.  You will quickly weed out the guy who goes to Las Vegas and spends all his time in the bars partying.  Do you really want to take his advice when he, himself, doesn’t take his own advice?  It is something you really need to consider as you find people to listen to.

Remember, pretty much every technique in the fitness industry today is not new.  Nutritional ideas that existed years ago still work today.  Yes, scientific discoveries have helped alot, but even then they have only changed the outlook a little bit.  The same goes for training techniques.  Why spend a ton of money to have someone tell you what exercises to do when you can get that same information for free?  The main reason is that people think they only get quality advice if they pay for it.  The reality is that the information you need is at your fingertips—just type away in Google and you will find what you need.
