Burn Fat with Tom Venuto

November 30, 2014 By Michael Mahony, ISSA CPT Leave a Comment

burn fat

Burn fat–that's what Tom Venuto wants to teach us. It is part of the title of his book, Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle. Tom has become somewhat of an internet legend with his practical and easy to follow approach to fat loss. If you've been reading this site for long you will know that I have great respect for Tom and the things he teaches. In fact, despite all the different nutritional approaches I've written about, they all have their basis in the principles Tom puts forth in Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle.

If you are looking to burn fat then please read on because Tom Venuto is an authority on the topic. He has taught many how to burn fat efficiently.

Who Is Tom Venuto?

tom-venutoTom Venuto is a bodybuilder, gym owner, freelance writer, success coach and author of “Burn the Fat, Feed The Muscle” (BFFM): Fat Burning Secrets of the World's Best Bodybuilders and Fitness Models. Tom has written over 150 articles and has been featured in IRONMAN magazine, Natural Bodybuilding, Muscular Development, Muscle-Zine, Exercise for Men and Men's Exercise. Tom's inspiring and informative articles on bodybuilding, weight loss and motivation are featured regularly on dozens of websites worldwide.

The above is what Tom's bio on http://bodybuilding.com says. I would like to add some of my own information about Tom as a person because I think sometimes it helps people to get into a program when they understand the author and his or her motivations.

Tom is one of the most personable people I have met in the fitness industry. His concern for others shows through from your initial contact with him and you never lose that feeling. He runs the Burn the Fat Inner Circle and is very active in the forums there. He does not hold back information. Tom is also very active on Twitter (@tomvenuto). Send him a tweet and you will likely get a reply. I had the good fortune of meeting Tom online through some other freinds. He has always been encouraging and helpful to me. He has never acted superior or even hinted that he is bothered by any contact I've ever had with him. It always amazes me considering that he is light years ahead of me when it comes to fitness and the fitness industry.

One of the friends of Fitness Expose, Jackie (aka Girlwithnoname) has done an interview with Tom and I post it below. It is a good watch.

Burn Fat With Tom Venuto

In his book, Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle, Tom presents several balanced approaches to nutrition that I definitely agree with. At the most basic level, Tom recommends paying close attention to your macronutrient ratios and suggests keeping them in the 40/40/20 (protein, carbohydrates and fat) range. He gives some great lists of food sources for each macronutrient. For anyone with no clue how to start, Tom's approach will get you results. Tom also lists carb cycling as one of the methods he uses to get stubborn fat off his clients. He gives one of the best explanations of carb cycling–both how to do it and why it works–that I have ever read.

Tom also presents a program for weight training. Tom comes at it from a bodybuilder's perspective, but he explains how the average person can do the programs he sets forth. He understands that not everybody trains exactly the way he does, but he encourages you to train with intensity and get that heart rate up.

If you are looking for a practical way to burn fat and get into shape then Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle is the book for you. You can trust the author (Tom Venuto) and the content. It isn't the best-selling eBook on the topic by luck. You will burn fat consistently by following the principles Tom sets forth.

As I said previously, there are many exotic and crazy approaches to fat loss, but Tom's methods work. They are tried and true ways to burn fat. Give them a shot and you will not be sorry you did.

Saturday Sharing: My Rant Bad Bodybuilding Information

November 8, 2014 By Michael Mahony, ISSA CPT 1 Comment

bodybuilding rant

The bodybuilding industry is huge and everyone wants a piece of the action. The internet makes it easy to share information and find information. As a result, there has been a huge influx of terrible bodybuilding information on the web.

When I started this site, Fitness Expose, my intention was to create a sort of consumer reports for bodybuilding and fitness. While that idea morphed into what is here today, I still do my best to point out problematic bodybuilding information. I am not afraid to call out someone who is much better known than I am in an effort to get them to improve the information that they put out. It infuriates me when I see inconsistencies in the mantra from some big name industry people.

Promoting Bodybuilding Products Only for the Money

One thing that truly gets under my skin is inconsistency for the sake of money. So many in the bodybuilding industry are guilty of this. Imagine for a moment you read an eBook by Bob Bodybuilder and in that book he states:

Workouts need intensity and the best way to get that is to work out harder and longer. Workouts lasting less than 90 minutes are for pansies.

Now imagine that you open up your inbox one day and there is an email advertising the 4 Minute Workout. You read the following:

We really don't have time for long workouts. The 4 minute workout will give you results in just 4 minutes a day. It is the exact program I use.

You take a closer look and guess who the email is from? You guessed it! Bob Bodybuilder is promoting a 4 minute workout. Am I the only person on this planet offended by this? Can you tell me why someone would write one thing in their own book while promoting exactly the opposite? It is all about the money to them. At that point I no longer believe anything Bob Bodybuilder says because he can clearly be bought for a price.

Dangerous Bodybuilding Techniques

Bodybuilding as a sport can be quite harmful to your health. The types of dieting that is done and the supplements taken can have terrible effects on your body. However, when a bodybuilder does these things they do it fully aware of the potential consequences. It worries me when I see famous bodybuilders giving out training advice and promoting things that are known to be quite dangerous. It is fine to present the information, but I would like to see a disclaimer that warns people it might not be for the beginner to intermediate trainee.

Making Bodybuilding the Only Way

I personally love bodybuilding. I think it is an amazing way to get inside your own head and become a better person. However, I am aware that bodybuilding isn't for everyone. I believe too many bodybuilders act as though their way is the only way. Get off your high horse and realize that you have the ability to help people just because of how you look.

Getting Caught in the Process

I was on Facebook the other day and saw a picture that showed a cardio machine with the final data from a cardio workout. One comment that was made was regarding fasted or unfasted cardio and the person making the comment is in incredible shape. If she told me she got in that shape by doing nothing but push ups for cardio I would likely try it. She is an IFBB Professional and knows her stuff. Her comment hit me hard because I am the analytical type. She said:

Too many people want to argue about doing cardio fasted. I say just do your damned cardio. It has to get done so go do it.

I loved the simplicity of that comment and it has changed my mind about a lot of things. I am no longer going to get caught up in the process. I am going to enjoy my training whenever and wherever I can. How about you?

Saturday Sharing: My Thoughts on Budget Gyms

October 25, 2014 By Michael Mahony, ISSA CPT 1 Comment

budget-gyms.min

Budget gyms are all the rage these days. From Planet Fitness to Crunch Fitness to Fitness 19, there is an explosion of gyms that offer memberships that are less than $10 a month. Today I want to give you my thoughts on these budget gyms.

I am all for saving money, but I also need to have good equipment. What I am going to tell you about budget gyms may surprise you, but it is the truth as I have experienced it.  I was a member of 24 Hour Fitness for many years. My experience with them is that they continually raised my monthly dues and continually provided me with worse service. Equipment was always broken and it didn't get fixed in a timely manner. It was very frustrating. Then along came Fitness 19 to our town.

At first I was very leery because another gym, Chuze Fitness, had opened up as well and it had no free weights at all. I cannot and will not workout without some free weights. After talking to the staff who were handling the opening of Fitness 19 in Buena Park, California, I decided to join. As soon as they opened I was in that gym daily. I wound up cancelling my 24 Hour Fitness membership as a result. I wound up paying the higher fee of just $12 a month to have all club access. So far it has been worth it.

To me you need to be careful when joining a budget gym, but don't shy away just because they are cheap. Check them out. Ask questions. See if they have the tools you need to get your workout done. What works for one person won't necessarily work for another person (the Experiment of One). These budget gyms are cheaper because they generally don't offer showers or other amenities that the more expensive gyms offer. However, most of us don't even utilize these extras, but we are paying for them monthly.

I say screw the high priced gyms! Get yourself into a budget gym and start working out regularly.

MAX Muscle: Phase 1

February 23, 2014 By Michael Mahony, ISSA CPT 1 Comment

max-muscleSome time ago I used a full body workout routine and loved it. My body responded quite well and it gave me flexibility to make some major adjustments if and when needed. When I heard that someone I have a lot of respect for was using The Max Muscle Plan by Brad Scheonfeld I got intrigued, so I looked it up.

Periodization

Periodization is the systematic planning of athletic or physical training. The aim is to reach the best possible performance in the most important competition of the year. It involves progressive cycling of various aspects of a training program during a specific period.

Dr. Schoenfeld has designed a periodized program that aims to keep your body guessing. He has carefully crafted the program into four different phases–Break-in Phase, Strength Phase, Metabolic Phase and Muscle Phase. I am currently in the Strength Phase. Now, because the details of this plan are the meat of Dr. Schoenfeld's book, I am not going to give you details, but I will give you the general idea of how this program has worked for me.

Strength Phase

After completing the Break-in Phase I jumped straight into the Strength Phase. It is very well programmed. I have been able to make continual progress on the amount of weight I am using. My body is responding positively to the program. My strength is going up and that necessarily means my muscles are growing. I am pushing as hard as I can. When I did full body workouts previously I was using the HIT style and while MAX Muscle is not HIT, it comes close to that.

Cardio

Dr. Schoenfeld definitely recommends doing cardio on the off days. This is the one place I have adjusted just a little. I do the cardio on the off days, but I also insert a little trick I learned when doing contest preparation. After each weight training session I insert a 10 minute HIIT session. I use a 30 second high intensity interval followed by a 30 second low intensity interval.  I found that this approach burns the maximum amount of fat, hence the adjustment to the plan here.

Why Adjust the Plan?

I am a big believer that there is no cookie cutter approach to work for everyone. I believe that Dr. Schoenfeld has come up with an ingenious plan and it will work exactly as laid out, but as an individual you need to exercise the Experiment of One. You have to find out what works for your body and then adjust things to meet  your own body's needs. It is that simple. Do this very cautiously. Make sure that your adjustment doesn't derail the plan. In my case I added a small HIIT session after each weight training session. That will not drastically change the overall program so I felt safe making that adjustment.

My Recommendation

The MAX Muscle Plan by Dr. Brad Schoenfeld is available in a paperback version or a Kindle version from Amazon.com. I believe that you should add this weapon to your arsenal. It works quite well and is a complete program that lasts many months. By grabbing a copy of this book you will be given workouts for the next 6 months that will continually make your body guess at what is coming next.

Optimum Nutrition’s Amino Energy Reviewed

February 21, 2014 By Michael Mahony, ISSA CPT Leave a Comment

amino-energy

I am a huge believer in using BCAAs during a workout. I started doing this with Scivation Xtend and the results I got were simply amazing. However, the cost of Xtend quickly became prohibitive for me when my business fell on some tough times. I decided to give Optimum Nutrition's Amino Energy a try because it claims to give you energy during your workout and it has BCAAs loaded in it.

Taste

I tried the grape flavor. The taste is good. It isn't great. On a scale of 1 to 5 I would give it a 3. It has a bit of an aftertaste, but that didn't bother me at all. It definitely tasted like grape and that's something not every other product can claim–accurate flavor.

Effectiveness

When i was using Xtend I found that my muscles were not as sore. With this Amino Energy product I saw similar, though not quite as effective, results. I enjoyed less muscle soreness after an intense training session, but I could still feel it. With Xtend it was nothing at all…no discomfort. As for energy during a workout, I didn't really notice anything. Perhaps it could just be because I always get pumped for my training sessions?

Value

I would say that the price to effectiveness ratio makes this a product you are going to want to try. As I said at the start, I think BCAAs should be consumed during training sessions to get better results. This product serves that need and it does it quite well.

Recommendation

I would recommend using this product. It tastes good and performs as advertised. I saw nothing negative at all about it.
