A Legend Passes: Joe Weider

March 23, 2013 By Michael Mahony, ISSA CPT Leave a Comment

joe-weiderFlex Magazine has announced the very sad news today that Joe Weider has passed. Joe Weider was known as the father of bodybuilding. He was the co-founder of the International Federation of Bodybuilders (IFBB) along with his brother, Ben Weider. He was also the creator of the Mr. Olympia and Mrs. Olympia contests that have become the Super Bowl of the bodybuilding world. He was the publisher of several fitness magazines including Muscle & Fitness, Flex, Men's Fitness and Shape.

Joe was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. His parents were Polish immigrants. Joe was always into shaping his physique and even published his first issue of Your Physique magazine when he was 14 years old. He created his own barbells using car wheels and axles. In the 1950s, Joe began creating numerous bodybuilding courses including the Weider System of Bodybuilding.

Joe was very involved in the supplement business, but that did not come without its own problems. In 1972, the Weiders were the target of a U.S. Postal service investigation as a result of their claims for a product known as Weirder Formula No. 7. The problematic claim for the U.S. Postal service investigators was that consumers could “gain a pound a day” in mass. Weider was forced to change his marketing practices and claims.

In the 1980s, Weider faced charges from the FTC in relation to two products–Weider's Anabolic Mega-Pak and Dynamic Life Essence. This case was settled with Weider agreeing to remove claims that these two products could help build muscles. He was forced to refund $400,000 and if the refunds did not reach that level, he was to fund research into the relationship between nutrition and muscle building.

Joe Weider was a well-loved figure in the bodybuilding industry. He has been present at every Mr. Olympia contest ever held. He held “his” bodybuilders in high regard and helped them to become successful. Arnold Schwarzenegger was one notable person helped by Weider.

Joe will be missed within the bodybuilding community. He was a pioneer and much of the success of today's bodybuilding industry is owed to this one man.

2013 Arnold Classic Results

March 4, 2013 By Michael Mahony, ISSA CPT Leave a Comment

arnoldclassic.jp

The 2013 Arnold Classic was held this past weekend and I have a review of the results for you below. I made some predictions in my 2013 Arnold Classic Preview post. Let's see how I did.

Men's Bodybuilding

The field was quite impressive. I  correctly predicted the top 2 spots.

1. Dexter Jackson

dexter-arnold

Dexter just looked shredded. He came in with impressive conditioning and was head and shoulders better than his competition. He looked like he came to win and win he did. As you will see from the picture to the left, he is well proportioned and balanced. His quads look tremendous. His calves are amazing. His traps are massive and I am partial to that look myself.

I've trained alongside Dexter at Gold's Gym – Venice and he is a huge guy (obviously). His work ethic is amazing. He is also one of the nicest guys you will ever meet. I say congratulations to Dexter on his impressive 4th Arnold Classic victory. He deserved the win this year.
.

2. Ben Pakulski

pakulski-arnoldBen Pakulski is a rising start in the IFBB. He is an amazing bodybuilder who has improved so much in the past year. I saw Ben compete at the 2012 Flex Pro show and he has improved so much.

Ben has impressive quads. They blow everyone away. His 2nd place finish here along with his “Most Muscular” award have solidified his place in the IFBB ranks. I will say that I think Ben could use some work on his arms. They need to be larger for him to win more consistently.

Ben has his MI40 workout plan that is sold on the web. It is an amazing program that I have previously reviewed. I would recommend the program to anyone wanting great growth.

3. Tony Freeman

freeman-arnoldTony Freeman took 3rd. Many thought before the show that he would place at least 2nd, but Ben Pakulski took care of that.

Tony has consistently been at the top of IFBB shows for years. He is known as the X-Man for a reason. His physique is the classic X shape. I am not a huge fan of Tony, but even I have to admit that he looked incredible for this show. He did the work necessary to place high and it paid off.

Tony took home $50,000 for his efforts. Not bad for a weekend of work (yeah right!).

Women's Figure

I was slightly off on this one. I predicted Erin Stern would be #1 and Heather Dees would be #2, but the actual results were slightly different.

1. Candice Keene

keene-arnoldCandice Keene came to win. She looked in such great shape. I was amazed at her conditioning and apparently so were the judges.

Candice surprised everyone by taking the top spot in this rather competitive field of women. She obviously put in some hard work and managed to beat her competition.

2. Heather Dees

dees-arnoldHeather Dees claimed the second spot as I predicted. She looked wonderful. She is always consistent and puts in the hard work. I was very impressed with her physique this time around. She has improved tremendously.

Heather impressed the judges with her physique as well. She easily took the second spot.

3. Erin Stern

stern-arnoldErin Stern was my pick for the top spot, but she claimed the third spot in this show. She looked good, but both Keene and Dees were slightly better. I am sure the judges had a tough time with these placements.

Erin is always at the top of these things. She is one of the best figure competitors in the field these days and I look for her to consistently stay here.

Conclusion

The 2013 Arnold Classic was a hotly contested show from every division. It usually is. I am hoping to attend the show in 2014. For now, enjoy the pictures that are available on Bodybuilding.com.

2013 Arnold Classic Preview

February 28, 2013 By Michael Mahony, ISSA CPT 1 Comment

arnoldclassic.jp

The 2013 Arnold Classic takes place this coming weekend. It is shaping up to be an amazing show. Bodybuilding.com will have the webcast live throughout the weekend. It is a great way to catch the competition and see all the competitors live.

Men's Bodybuilding

The competitors in the Men's Bodybuilding category are:

Fouad Abiad
Darrem Charles
Toney Freeman
Marcus Haley
Dexter Jackson
Michael Kefalianos
Cedric McMillan
Ben Pakulski
Ed Nunn
Ronny Rockel
Fred Smalls
Hidetada Yamagishi

My prediction for how the Top 3 will pan out is pretty simple. I think we will see Dexter Jackson taking first place, Ben Pakulski taking second place and Hidetada Yamagishi taking third place. I know my third place pick might seem strange, but I believe Hide will come in on target and blow away other competitors who were looking for that third place finish.

Women's Figure

Like the Men's Bodybuilding section, the Women's Figure is loaded with big name competitors. The list of competitors who will be present are:

Ava Cowan
Heather Dees
Olga Gallardo
Mallory Haldeman
Aleisha Hart
Candice John
Candice Keene
Candice Lewis
Kamla Macko
Camala Rodriguez
Giada Simari
Nicole Sims
Erin Stern
Gennifer Strobo
Alea Suarez
Ann Titone
Natalie Waples

I am going to predict Erin Stern takes first place, Heather Dees will take second and Mallory Haldeman will take third. It is going to be an exciting battle, that is for sure.

Conclusion

The Arnold Classic is one of the major shows of the year in the IFBB. The competition is always fierce and this year will be no different. It is always surprising what actually happens at these shows. Anybody could take it depending upon how they show up. Keep an eye on Bodybuilding.com for coverage this entire weekend. You will not be disappointed.

Sheru Classic 2012

October 8, 2012 By Michael Mahony, ISSA CPT 1 Comment

Phil Heath wins Sheru 2012The Sheru Classic was held in India this past weekend. Once again, Phil Heath came out on top. The Top 5 for the Men's Bodybuilding Division were as follows:

  1. Phil Heath
  2. Kai Greene
  3. Toney Freeman
  4. Roelly Winklaar
  5. Michael Keffalanos

Phil Heath was just too good for the competition once gain.

The competition was fierce as these pros stepped on stage just after the Olympia showdown in Las Vegas a week ago. Once again, Kai Greene pushed Phil Heath to the limit, but Phil came away with his second title in 2 weeks.

The Sheru Classic is held in New Dehli every year. It follows the Mr. Olympia contest in Las Vegas so it usually gets a lot of the very same competitors. This makes sense since they only have to hold their conditioning for an additional week. It seems that the winner of the Mr. Olympia contest manages to win this one each year.

The IFBB is trying to spread the sport internationally with contests like this. Bodybuilding is generally not an accepted sport in the United States because of the use of steroids and the like. I could discuss the use of steroids and what that really means, but that's for another day. I think people need to realize that these guys may use things to enhance their body, but they still have to do the work, the eating and the training, to get the body you see on stage. They are amazing.

I get upset when people say they don't get interested in bodybuilding because “I don't want to look like that.” Well, I watch NFL football, but I don't want to look like a defensive lineman! It is about appreciating the athlete's performance. These guys bust their asses and they deserve recognition for it.
