Saturday Sharing: My Thoughts on Mr. Olympia

Saturday Sharing:
My Thoughts on Mr. Olympia

Phil Heath was crowned 3 time Mr. Olympia at the end of September. I have heard so much in the way of conspiracy theories and all of them make me laugh.

Mr. Olympia is the Super Bowl of bodybuilding. With that said, the winner has to be the best of the best. The most elite bodybuilder in the world. As I sat and watched the pre-judging I was impressed with several people: Dennis Wolf, Shawn Rhoden, Kai Greene. However, when Phil Heath stepped on stage I knew it was over. He was by far the best physique on the stage.

In my mind the battle was for second place. Phil Heath ran away with the first place spot and the judges clearly agreed with me. They actually had him go back in line when doing the call outs because it was clear to them that nobody else challenged him for the top spot.

I know that lots of Kai Greene fans believe he was robbed, but Kai made a mistake by coming in so big this year. He was much closer last year. Had he come in fully conditioned like last year with some improvements this might have been a different story.

Dennis Wolf looked amazing. He was just a little off when compared to Kai Greene. To me the order of the Top 3 was clear from pre-judging onward.

I am sorry for those of you who think there was a conspiracy. This was classic bodybuilding judging at its finest. I am here to say that Phil Heath deserved his third Sandow.

Why I Love Mr. Olympia Weekends

September 29, 2013 By Michael Mahony, ISSA CPT 1 Comment

olympia-weekend

Olympia weekend is an amazing time for someone who loves bodybuilding the way I do. It is like the Super Bowl and NFL playoffs all in one weekend! I cannot adequately describe how excited I get when it is Mr. Olympia time. Here are 5 reasons why I love Mr. Olympia Weekends.

  1. There is a constant atmosphere of intense competition. The Mr. Olympia weekend involves Men's and Women's Bodybuilding, Bikini, Men's and Women's Physique, Figure and Fitness. Each category brings with it some fierce competitors. They give me more motivation in 2 days than anything I can get all year long from other sources. Just seeing the hard work they put in gets me to the gym to work hard. It is an amazing event when there are so many divisions involved. Men and women both are competing against the best of the best.
  2. The sacrifice these people make tells me that I can do it as well. Seeing the sacrifices these people make gives me hope. I know that I can do it myself because I have the drive and motivation deep inside of me. It is ingrained into my soul. I know that it can be done and it will be done.
  3. I love seeing the different packages people bring to the stage. Bodybuilding is truly the only sport where you literally compete against yourself. That's one reason I love it. Each competitor is compared and judged, but the fact is that they have brought to the stage a package that they feel is their best package. It is extremely interesting to see what these pros bring. Is Kai Greene going to be huge or is he going to be lean? Will Phil Heath have those full round muscle bellies or will he come up flat? It is all a surprise at the time of the show.
  4. The best of the best are on stage and showing all of us how it is done. All the divisions are showcasing the best of the best. If that division is the one you are interested in you can learn a lot about how to get the job done by looking at what they did. They show us just how to get to our best.
  5. It brings together all of the bodybuilding fans across the world. This is perhaps the best part of the weekend. Bodybuilding fans from around the world coming together to celebrate their sport. I love this aspect of the weekend.

These are my thoughts on why I love Mr. Olympia weekends. What are your thoughts? Share them with me in the comments.

Who the Hell are You?

May 24, 2013 By Michael Mahony, ISSA CPT 1 Comment

Critical People

You sit at home watching YouTube and criticizing everything every single lifter does. Do you bother to think about where you are? Have you thought about the fact that you are at home on your Lazy Boy recliner not doing anything? What gives you the right to criticize? Just like people who don't vote should not complain about elected officials, people sitting on thei recliner watching videos on the internet should not complain about the form of those who are out there doing it every day! I have an injury and I am itching to get back into the gym. I cannot wait for the day to come that I can hit the iron again. I would never dream of criticizing the form of other people via YouTube videos. Do you understand what they are attempting to accomplish? Have you got a clue? I don't think so. That's when it is time to shut your mouth.

Think about this the next time you sit down at your keyboard and attempt to hate on someone. Think it through carefully. Yes, it is easy to talk crap when you are behind a keyboard, but if you can't back up what you say then say nothing at all. That's how I feel about it. Do any of you feel differently?

The IFBB Europa Show of Champions was held on April 19 and 20 in Orlando, FL. The competitors were split into various divisions like Men's 212, Men's Physique, Women's Physique and Women's Bikini. The show was another great one.

alves-europaTroy Alves made his first foray into the 212 division and came away with a first place finish. This is the second time Alves has won a title at the Europa in Orlando. In 2009 Alves won the Men's Open Bodybuilding title. Alves win has furthered the current trend of bodybuilders older than 40 winning a contest or placing high. Dexter Jackson, Johnnie Jackson and Toney Freeman are other over-40 competitors who have placed in the top two of various contests over the past year. Raul Jiminez (2nd) and Marco Rivera (3rd) rounded out the top three.

Alves is known for his symmetrical and balanced body. Alves has been featured in many fitness articles over the years and has appeared on the cover of FLEX magazine. Today he lives in Peoria, Arizona, USAwhere he owns his own supplement store Pro Nutrition.

Troy competed on February 20, 2010 at the 1st Phoenix Pro IFBB Pro Bodybuilding Show in Mesa, Arizona. Troy Alves won his 2nd IFBB Professional 1st place win in Connecticut Saturday July 30, 2011 for the Europa battle of champions and his 3rd IFBB Professional 1st place win in Arizona at the 2nd Annual Phoenix Pro IFBB Pro Bodybuilding Show Saturday August 2011.

Troy is currently sponsored by USN (Ultimate Sports Nutrition) and is available for store guest appearances and for guest posing at body building shows by contacting or calling the Pro Nutrition store in Peoria, Arizona. Troy is known for his loyal fan appreciation and easy communication with questions about the sport, for sports and health conferences / expos.

mello-europaPatricia Mello successfully defended the title she won a year ago and won for the third time in her Women’s Physique career. It was the second straight win for the 5’11 Brazilian, who was coming off a win at last week’s Pro Grand Prix. Mikaila Soto placed second, the third time she has finished as the runner-up in the last year. Amanda Dunbar placed third in her debut in the division.

Patricia is an international fitness model and actress. Her sponsor is Jan Tana, Inc.

king-europaCourtney King took first place and it was the first win of her very short career. She is the IFBB's youngest competitor at the age of 19. She turned pro at the 2012 NPC USAs. She has now placed first and second in her first two IFBB shows.Ashley Kaltwasser – the 2012 NPC Team Universe Overall winner – placed second, her highest finish in three IFBB competitions. Aly Veneno finished in third for the second straight contest. Veneno also placed 3rd at the Battle on the Beach.

Courtney is a member of Team Bombshell. This team has been doing extremely well of late, having swept the Pittsburgh Figure Pro just a few weeks ago. In the past 24 months, Team Bombshell Girls have earned 25 IFBB Pro Cards, 23 Olympia Invites, won 9 IFBB Pro Championship wins, 150+ Overall NPC Titles, 300+ NPC Class Wins, 600+ NPC Trophies and 9 of our Athletes signed with the exclusive Management Company, FMG.

This is a team to be watched in the competition world.

anderson-europaAnderson, who earned his IFBB pro card by winning the Overall at last year’s NPC Masters Nationals, improved drastically from his 7th-place finish at last week’s Pro Grand Prix. That placing was Anderson’s first outside of the top five in four professional contests. Sadik Hadzovic finished as the runner-up, the third time he has finished in the No. 2 spot as a pro. Hadzovic has now placed in the top five in all five of his MPD competitions. Dean Fazzolari placed third, his highest finish in three pro contests.

FIBO 2013 Competition Results

April 22, 2013 By Michael Mahony, ISSA CPT 1 Comment

FIBO 2013

The 2013 FIBO Power Bodybuilding competition was held on the weekend of April 13 and 14. The field was impressive. Competitors were part of both Men's Bodybuilding and Women's Fitness groups. I will review the Top 3 from the Men's Bodybuilding and present pictures for your enjoyment.

The show is held in conjunction with one of the world's largest fitness expos. It takes place in Germany and is an annual event.

Men's Bodybuilding – Top 3

Cedric McMillan

Cedric McMillanCedric looks amazing. He has size and definition. His conditioning was excellent. He has a very nice symmetry that aids in this victory for him. He obviously trained quite hard for this show. His delts are amazing, having nice peaks and a rounded look to them. His biceps are tremendous. His quads have nice separation and look massive.

From Cedric's Bodybuilding.Com profile:

I been a fan of the sport since I can remember. I used to draw comic books when I was younger and I actually used to use Flex and Muscle & Fitness to help me with drawing the muscles for my super-heroes in my comic book. I have a picture that my Godmother gave me a few years ago of me when I was 5 years old doing a lunging double bi pose, and I didn't even remember taking that picture but her and my momma said “all I used to do is talk about muscles”

He has obviously loved the sport for avery long time and now he is making a huge impact on the sport he so loves.

Johnnie Jackson

Johnnie JacksonJohnnie Jackson took second place behind Cedric McMillan. Johnnie is one of the strongest bodybuilders alive, having competed in many powerlifting meets. Johnnie's body is very asthetically pleasing to me. He looks big but balanced. He has awesome quads. He exudes that look of power.

From Johnnie Jackson's Bodybuilding.Com profile:

Johnnie is known as the worlds strongest pro, due to his participation and domination in the sport of power lifting. He has the world record for the 760 lbs he pulled during his deadlifts. He can also bench 600 lbs.

His favorite sport is football and he enjoys listening to DMX!

Johnnie has an incredible chest and it shows in this picture. As mentioned, he is the strongest pro bodybuilder alive. Johnnie can out lift most anyone.

Edward Nunn

Edward NunnEd Nunn came in sharp. He always has decent size, but this time he was extremely defined. Third is a great showing for him. It will give him momentum going into other shows this year. Ed is one of those up and coming bodybuilders who we will hear a lot about in the coming years. Mark my words on that.
